HELP PLEASE, 1989 50HP Force overheating???

Hi, I'm new to the boating community, just got a 79 ranger bass boat with a 50 horse force engine. I paid 700 for the boat motor and trailer. BUT the motor came with just the battery wires and nothing else. I put a wiring harness on and got it running, and hooked up the steering. My problem was today while running the motor in a barrel of water I noticed that the motor was sizzling hot and there was no water pressure or suction, where the water goes in down by the prop. I talked to a guy and he said it needs a water pump, when I took the lower end off the plastic star shaped pump looked fine and turned with the propeller, but yet it still gets hot. Isn't the water suppose to come out of the two small holes between the lower end and the motor??? I'm really puzzled and a local mechanic said it would cost me over a 150 to get it fixed? I just spent 250 on the control box cables, and wiring harness, with the steering bar. The steering cables where already there. What would you say I do??? Thank You for any help.

Is there a water pumo, below the water impellar that draws the water to the motor for cooling? When I took the shaft and four bolts the impellar became exposed with the steel gasket that the impellar rides on, then there was a hole that went down to the splines for the gears and propellar. Is the water pump between the impellar and the prop? I'mt thinking that might be where my problem is. Thanks for any help

I also noticed a clip, looks like it goes to a toe hitch bar laying next to the shifter on the lower end, and some dirt with milky white oil. Could it be possible that the thermostate is stuck on this motor, and where can I find it, Also where did the pin come from? I looked up into where the lower end shaft goes and couldn't see where it would have went???

You could have dried up mud clogging the passage. With the lower unit off try spaying water up in it with a garden hose and see if anything come out.

I reassemble everything and it seems the only time it overheats is when it is in idle in the water. If you excelerate the throttle the temp goes down and it seems more water comes out. I'm wondering if the thermostat could be bad.

I had this problem on my 1990 120hp when I bought it. Very little if no water coming out at idle, warning horn would sound off, but it was ok in a higher RPM. I had to replace my impeller. It might look ok but they need good stiff rubber to shoot the water though at idle. The fins should be straight when you take it out.

I had a simular problem. Impeller looked good. But was not. Changed my impeller and that corrected my problem. Change your impeller.

yeah I took the thermostat out and that was not the problem. I looked at the impellar again, and the splines seem to be in fairly good shape, but I already ordered a new impellar, so we will see if that works. Thanks for all the advice.
