I bought the engine today. It is an 198? but it looks new. When it is running, in a 55 gal drum, water dribbles out of the peehole but it blows out of the exhaust ??? ports on the rear of the lower unit. Is this normal? The guy I bought it from said he thought it sucked some trash into the water passage and stopped up the peehole. I'm hoping it isn't a blown head gasket or cracked case. I will check compression tomorrow.

Thanks!

First, try to post the model number and serial number of your motor whenever asking a question.

You can try to push a wire into the telltale peehole to dislodge any blockage.

Yes, the water should exit the exhaust.

I would put a new impeller in the water pump as they deteriorate with age. This may also be the reason you have only a dribble out of the telltale.

Examine and change the lower unit oil, looking for water intrusion and excessive metal shavings.

And new fuel filter and spark plugs.

Thank you for the reply roscoe.

Model # 10R77A
Serial # 4630389

I'm new to boating so I have a question. Why does exhaust exit the lower unit and the prop? and where would be the best place to get a manual for the engine? Could I replace the impeller without a manual? I'am mechanicaly inclined.

Not advisable to try it without a manual. Not that it's particularly hard to do, but it will guide you through the procedure and have pics to refer to. You can get a Manual at any Johnny/Rude dealer or Marine outlet(West Marine) or order one at the bottom left of this page
