Ok, I bought this boat that is a nice boat but Im having second thoughts on this motor. I had it on lake Erie on the fourth and it was a bad day to say the least. It has a 1982 or 83 Mercruiser 898 in it with a closed cooling system. I was motoring out and she started smoking and the temp rose and I shut her down. the previous owner said he took out the thermostat because the marina said it would run cooler...hummm, and he also said he changed the empeller this spring. My question is what steps can I take to narrow down why it over heated, and were is the cap for the antifreeze to be added, new to boating and wanting to learn , please be easy on me. New to the forum also, nice info here, oh and we had to be towed in.....not fun.

Make sure the incoming water is getting out. Look in the stickys for a manual.

Be sure to check the impeller. NEVER trust what a seller tells you, they are trying to get rid of something, not trying to run off a buyer. So they will lie about anything.
Your exhaust manifolds or risers could be plugged up. Then water can't flow through the system.

Re: HELP! Please help with this

You need to post some pictures of your engine. You may not have closed cooling, and if you don't know what it is, then you sure can't check it.
To inspect an impeller you take the pump apart and inspect the impeller by looking at it. 15 seconds of running with out water can destroy and impeller.
