Re: Help please!!locked up?? inboard

Just came in from garage, I removed both risers actually quite easily, niether gasket broke or tore, there is NO signs of gasket problem at all, I do see a bit of sediment in ports which I'm thinking is normal, I will pick up new gaskets and install, just don't understand how water could enter the cylinder when dieseling?? I am really hopeing thats all that the problem is, it almost happens everytime like I said, mabey the idle may be set a bit high as well, will put back together in the next few days and try, will I get the same test results with it connected to muffs as the same as at the actuall lake?? thx agn Rick, much appreciated

...just don't understand how water could enter the cylinder when dieseling??

When the engine "diesels" it is uncontrolled and can actually spin backwards - the exhaust becomes the intake and it sucks water from the exhaust.

No, you will not be able to put any load at all on the engine, therefore not as much heat.

When the engine "diesels" it is uncontrolled and can actually spin backwards - the exhaust becomes the intake and it sucks water from the exhaust.
This is the "key" issue on reversion during a "run-on" event.

Sometimes (frequently actually) when an engine "diesels" it does run backwards and that is when water will be sucked back into the exhaust system. It wouldn't that much of a problem if it wasn't turning the wrong way as it would push out any water that is there........BUT turning backwards, it doesn't take a lot of water to get in there and it all happens about when the engine the engine comes to a stop.

Then you have water in there when you subsequently try to crank it.....and of course, it won't turn over very far when it hits the water in the cyl.....

You do need to resolve this since water hitting a hot valve can easily warp it in addition to the other problems you're having.

^ I agree. And if you forced it enough to break the starter there is a chance that the connecting rods are now bent.

First things first, pull the plugs and look for water in the cylinders.

I finally got the starter back from being rebuilt, turns out from my attempts of trying a few times when it was hydro locked the armature shaft seperated from the armature, probably from the heat, cost for complete rebuild was $ 185.00, compared to $ 400.00 for a new rebuilt from boat dealer, just waiting on riser gaskets to come in and should be good to go!!.....thanx again for everyones help and suggestions

I would change the oil and install new plugs when you go to lake test, also idle should be around 600 rpm when warm, if much higher it will run on and you need to make sure to let it idle down for a minute or so before shutting off, even if turning around to get a skier etc. idle up close then into neutral for a few before shutting down. Kind of a pain but it is a common problem it can be fixed but you need to know if its idle, timing, carb setting, carbon build up, or a combo of these issues.

Re: Help please!!locked up?? inboard

I had dieseling problems the first summer i used my boat (bought used 2007). I had the timing & idling checked. They were both out of spec, so had them adjusted and the dieseling went away. Always let her cool down at idle before shutting off engine.

Re: Help please!!locked up?? inboard

dont want to dampen your enthusiasm, but ive been through the same thing when i had a
4.3 LX and for me it was a rusted through head, water jacket to exhaust port that caused the problem

i would recommend, as already suggested , that you have a real close look at the manifolds and risers, and if they are good, it might pay you to take the heads off and have them tested, as by eye i couldn't see a problem, until that is i got the faulty one back, the guy who did the testing left a screw driver stuck in the hole so i could see it

oh by the way it was a 1994 year motor

Re: Help please!!locked up?? inboard

I got the starter back from being rebuilt, turns out when it was hydro locked and me attempting to start it, the the armature shaft broke right off the windings, anyways I installed the starter, connected the muffs and started the engine, fired up almost instantly, let run for about 20 mins or so evrything seems fine, temp guage was normal, going to take it out to the lake this weekend and give it a good test on the water....I'm assumeing every things ok I guess the real test will be when ran up to temp on the water??
