Re: Help please on a volvo penta sterndrive

I will post more pics, detailed pics. Like i said earlier in my posts im an outboard engine guy, i never worked with an i/o setup or a sterndrive. As far as a budget goes... yeah, not really im just going along with it you know? when i have the money i will buy what i need. Its a project boat. My last project was a 71 Monte i put a supercharged 502 in it with a 9" ford rear and powerglide tranny. I built the whole thing from the ground up myself. I never did a boat so i figure this is what the wife and i want, unfortunatly i know diddly squat about this type of drive... the engine, im not the least bit worried about, i will have it running no problem even if it has to come out and be rebuilt, i know tolerances are alot different for marine engines than for automotive engines. The guy i got it from tells me its a 350 but as we all know it very well could be a 305 i need to look up the casting numbers. Ps dont sweat the auto distributor lol i sure as hell will not run that.. damn thing might as well be a blasting cap in a block of C-4 in the engine compartment...

Re: Help please on a volvo penta sterndrive

Well you've certainly got a mess of hoses.

I still think the engine is a crusader engine, not a Volvo aq200d.

Crusader did put out 305s with a 2 barrel carb like pictured. Also the valve covers appear to be a dark blue which I believe is a crusader color.

Have you checked the casting numbers yet?

I would suggest you go over the floor and stringers and transom carefully to make sure its not rotted out. You should take core samples from various areas of the boat.

You can get more info regarding core samples in the restoration forum.:)

Let us know what else you need.

Well i tried researching the core samples but i couldnt find anything on them, just mentioning of taking core samples.. i dont know where or how to take them to be honest and the last thing i want to do is weaken the stringers and/or transom... it may not look like it in the pics but all the framwork of the boat is very solid, the hull is rock solid i pulled the access out of the floor up fwd in the cabin it was dry underneath... i want to pull the fuel tank, because i dont know if theres any water/debris in there... but my main concern right now is this damn stern drive, im pretty sure im gonna end up pulling it off and having to put new steering bearings/bushings in it... luckily enough im pretty sure the internals are good to go on the sterndrive...unfortunatly good ole hurrican bill is blowing by here in nc so were catching some of its wrath right now so the boat covered and im in the house relaxing but i would like to get started taking the sterndrive off maybe tomorrow... who knows, Anyway i appreciate all the good info, i really do!!

One hint. This forum is for IO engine and drive systems. Please don't get started on floors, decks and the rest of the boats problems here. It just gets too confusing and the thread gets too long when it includes everything on the boat.
You might want a seperate thread for the outdrive, and one for the cooling system. But keeping one thread for everything stops a lot of people looking after it gets too long, or at least reading all the info to find out where and when the subject changed.

Re: Help please on a volvo penta sterndrive

Ok, so i got my upper outdrive pulled off and started to take the rest of my outdrive off, like i said earlier my steering fork is frozen, well its not the only thing frozen, with the helmet completely unbolted from the outdrive i still cannot pivot the drive... has anyone come across this problem before? The outdrive is actually frozen to the shaft that it pivots on... how the heck do you fix that???

Yes, I've come across those a few times.

Last one I ran into and had to try to fix, I ended up under the bed, in a fetal position sucking my thumb after 2 days of trying to get it apart. NEVER AGAIN.

It's called JUNK
I would suggest your start looking for new transom shield.

I will also bet you can't get the clamp ring out of the transom shield. The one that holds the engine flywheel cover in.

When I run into something like that Don, I usually accept that it's junk and then separate the parts using a grinder with a cutting disk or a torch. Makes for great therapy :)

Well i would love nothing more than to do that, however back to reality, its not happening that way... i need to figure out a viable solution to fix this crap. If i had an extra outdrive laying around id surely cut this whole damn thing out and call it a day.. unfortunatly outdrives arent the most inexpensive things around so i have to fix what i have here... ya know?

You obviously don't have the experience that I do, or you could look at the pictures and know that you have a lot of very expensive problems. Sorry you seem to think there is an inexpensive alternative, but unless you have tried to get something that corroded apart before, you just don't realize what all can and usually does go wrong. Then even after you get it all apart, it may not be worth putting back together again.

The most expensive boat you can get is a free one.

One you buy for a great price is one that probably should have been free, or it better be a classic like a 57 Chevy or a 54 Vette.
There isn't a Bayliner built that fits those catagories.

You can buy a used boat that runs and looks good far cheaper than that one can be fixed. Even if it all came apart without damaging other parts ( Which isn't going to happen )
