Ok, so after posting here about some motor noise/vibration the suggestion was to check the gimbal bearing and U-joints.

I did so and found the following. Gimbal seems fine, moves smooth etc. U-Joints were rusty, and I plan on replacing.

Pretty sure the U-Joints need replaced. And I want to replace the gaskets and o-rings. THing is I don't know what to get is there a "kit" to buy? The tag on the out board has this number but I dont' think its the model/sn # not sure 6158972

Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated. Also, I assume water shouldn't be getting in there... so what are some of the common ways for it to happen? EDIT: Also this started last weekend, i left it in the water all week not know what was wrong. When I went to the boat today, it had quite a bit of water in it 2" or so. i assume that means something is leaking :0 Although we had a lot of rain, I doubt if that is what it was

Looks like the gimbal housing has a chunk bust off of it on the bottom. If I see it correctly, you are now in the market for a new housing, as water will be coming in there. The u-joints aren't all that hard to replace, if you have the right tools. Soaking them down with PB-Blaster or Liquid Wrench first will ease removal a bit, but they don't look in that bad of shape. Seen much worse. At least they've been greased, from the blob on the zerk. Looks like outer u-joint is missing 2 of the 4 rubber boots from it and would suspect water may have gotten into it. Gimbal bearing also looks like it's seen better days, from water intrusion, too.

Just make sure you are in forward gear before trying to re-install drive to gimbal.

wow,I'm seeing it like 04fx.That is a big piece missing surprised there was only 2" of water in boat after a week, sounds like you got extremely lucky.
As for taking the outdrive off without putting in forward somethings gotta give so I would bet you'll find something is bent when you put it back together.
