Hey everyone. Got the engine running really nice. Changed the waterpump over the weekend.. I only took the bottom half off from the boat to do the work.

When we did fire it up, I started to get this clicking noise. I attached the link here for you to hear what I am talking about.

I am also having problems getting it to go into forward gear. Actually it won't :( when I push it all the forward, it stalls the engine.

Any ideas??

Thanks

Weird Clicking noise.. Did I do something wrong when putting the two halves together? or could it be the shift cable?

I was just going to post a question about a very similar noise. Random clicking noise coming from the rear of my 260. I did not notice it from the outside but was clear as day on the inside. I took a stethoscope to it but could not locate the origin.

Shift into fwd so that the brass shoe is straight and remove the drive to make sure you installed the drive correctly

Thanks :) I will be checking it tomorrow night. I am building a stand for it tonight so I can work on it easier. I was thinking that maybe I did something wrong in the lower half? I will take the whole outdrive off this time and split it again to check everything. Also I will get some photos for you guys to help me make sure everything is ok.

As for the lower shift cable.. If I need to get a new one, is there a kit that I should be looking for? I don't want to buy the wrong one.

Thanks again!!!!

18-2603 will work for you If you still have the old cable that is installed from the front, just cut the cable at the boot and use a long socket to remove that part. You will need the straight tap to fully thread the housing because the new cables enter from the aft side of the housing.
Acquire a old control cable from a shop and remove the inner solid core.you will use this as a guide for the new cable casing.Go inside the boat , remove the black plastic sleeve and remove the core.Push the guide wire thru the core untill it comes out the stern, now remove the old outer casing leaving the core .
From the stern, slide this core thru the new cable and clamp the end with visegrips.push the new casing thru the bellows while someone pulls from inside the boat.install and tighten cable nut. No more than 2 threads can be visable.
Remove the control cable core and install the remaining parts

I dodn't know if the OP figured it out, but I can tell you that noise is the dog clutch teeth hitting. His shift cable adjustment is out, or the shift control has been bumped slightly, just enough for the dogs to almost engage....

Yep I got it figured out. When I had the outdrive off and halves split, I put them back together with the shift shaft off to the side instead of where it was supposed to be. I just took it all off and apart and did it right this time :) first time doing this for me. I'm glad it was a fixable mistake. Also my lower shift cable was a little off so I got that adjusted and all looks good. Only real test will be on the water. But I still have lots to do. Steering, throttle linkage, and electrical. Going from a Ford 2.3 to a older mercruiser 120 is a fair bit of work. Not hard or expensive but lots of thought and custom parts need to be made.
