Well I have put this off for long enough. Its time to do some work on the boat trailer. I need to re-wire the lights, new tires,new jack, the leaf springs are very rusty. I dont really know to much about trailers and how to repair them but im going to give it a shot. Do you guys have any suggestions at other things to look at or any tips that could be helpfull? Thanks alot.

Re: Help Please!

Hey.

When at first I saw your post with the subject 'Help Please' I didn't have a clou.

Would you please spend a couple of minutes reading these suggestions ?

Other than that I think you have to really work through your project on a budget level before heading off for spares and parts. It sounds as if the trailer is in bad need and as you go along even more is bound to show - ie frame, supporting points, axle, hubs, brakes, bearings.

First of all any work done on your trailer MUST be of such quality, that the trailer's safety on the road and ramp is in no way compromised. Any accident due to DIY certainly will make your insurance company back out. You have to use parts and spares designed for the use and to do all work according to industry standards.

Remember to check offers (new/used) and compare to the total cost on renovating the old trailer.

Re: Help Please!

I'll give you some help in regards to the lights.
First of all here are the wire colors and what they are for:
Brown = tail lights
White = ground
green = left signal/brake light
yellow = right signal/brake light

This should be spelled out on the package when you by the light kit.. Stick to this color scheme so you can use it with any vechicle that has a converter.
Next piece of advise: Ground wires. If you have trouble with the lights on your trailer sometime in the future.. it will most likely to be due to a bad ground.
Most light kits come with the connector with long leads for the brown, yellow & green but a short white wire for the ground. The idea being to screw the white wire into the tongue of your trailer and let the metal chassis of the trailer serve as a ground.
I NEVER rely on this. I do ground to the trailer but I also run a separate ground wire back to the lights as well. It is worth the few extra minutes and pocket change for wire. Believe me.. George

Re: Help Please!

Hello all

I second what George333 recommended in terms of running a ground wire to each lamp.

I just replaced my lights and could not get the lights to work. I tried many things and ultimately ended up having to run a pair of ground wires from the white to the back of the trailer (one wire for each lamp).

Do it right off and save yourself some time and effort.

Chris
