Hey everyone i tried using the search function and couldnt find what i was looking for. I recently had to replace the lower unit on my 1975 Johnson 115hp outboard. When i got the new one home i put it on and when i went to put the gear oil in it i discovered it was leaking alot back by the prop. Upon further inspection i found that the four bolts that go into the bearing housing assy (holds the prop shaft) were missing. I found an exploded view of the lower unit, and it looks like the bolts thread into some sort of retaining plate, but when i try and put the bolts in, they dont catch anything. Is it possible for that retaining plate to move around in there? If so how can i get it back in place so i can put the bolts in? Heres the link to the view of it, the parts im talking about are numbers 28 and 26. Thanks in advance guys

Re: Help Please!??!

The retaining plate will rotate in the housing. I use a couple of long guide rods to align the plate with the bearing housing when I install the bearing housing. Because of the depth of the housing and small space, short of removing the bearing housing, it would very hard to align the bolt holes.

Sounds like the new one isn't really new, if it is, send it back.
Your going to have to open that one up to fix it.

Hmmm, well its not new, its new to me though. I called the guy i got it from and he said that with a long threaded rod i should be able to get it, hopefully i can. If not he said that he will do it.....guess we'll see.
