I have a 1998 150 Johnson ocean runner. Well it runs great but when when I trim up while running it slows down. Then when I stop trimming it runs great.

Whats going on?

Thanks
Mike

Re: Help please

Here's an educated guess:

When you're operating the tilt/trim; there is considerable current draw. When this occurs, your alternator is "put to the test," and loading your engine down. The alternator will load the engine when you draw more current. Your tilt/trim motor will happily draw 5-7 Amps (me thinks.)

..As an analogy: Did you ever try jump starting someone's car in the winter? Notice how the "good" car is idling-away nicely before you connect the jumper cables? When the jumper cables are attached between the "good car" and the "dead" car; the car idle will appear more labored?

*probably* your battery is a little low. If you top-off the batteries, the heavy draw will be balanced by the battery current.

I hope this helps!

Ken Ameika.
Red Bank, NJ

Re: Help please

Thanks for the reply. It's a brand new battery and a new stator. And was doing it on the old battery and old stator. Do you have any other ideas on what it can be?

Thanks

Re: Help please

Sorry for the delay. Just returned from business.

Okay, here is another possibility: Is there a chance the hydraulic pump is drawing *so much* current such that it is very heavily loading your alternator/battery?

A rough test: If you put your multimeter over the battery terminals with the engine *not* running, you'll see something like 12.5-13.4VDC. When you activate the hydraulic motor for motor up, does the battery voltage fall hard to < 11.5 VDC?

Have you noticed the engine "labor-down" problem is worse on engine tilt up versus engine tilt down?

Again, sorry for the delay.

--Ken
Red Bank, NJ

Re: Help please

Oops. I didn't finish my thought: If you find that your tilt/trim motor is drawing tons of current (that is, your battery is getting drowned-out.) -- You may wish to consider an all points lube on any shaftworks and trunion areas on the outboard/transom bracket.

Also check to ensure nothing is blocking or resisting your motor's path as it tilts.

The worst item--the very worst--would be an autumn refurbishment of your tilt hydraulic pump motor. (Unlikely.)

Ken
