help pulling volvo 280 prop shaft

OK, I have got the milkshake, lets move on.

Bought the fill and drain o-ring, and prop shaft seals. Pulled lower unit (not sure I had to?) and made a slide hammer to pull the shaft off. It isn't coming easily and I don't want to gum up the threads, do I need to remove the vertical shaft first...or do I need to hammer harder?

Well, first of all, are you sure that is where the water is coming from? You did drain the gear lube and do a pressure test to find the leak............ RIGHT ?????

You did make sure the bellows didn't have water in it too, didn't you????


Yes, to pull the shaft you have to hammer harder. If it's been in salt water, it may even take some heat.

Can you give me the specs on the pressure test? What psi and for how long? Do I need to do a vacuum test as well?

Heat works wonders in removing those.

Im just adding my homemade lower unit shaft pulling tool to this thread. I just went out and bought a 2 foot threaded rod. I can't remember the exact size. screw this into the end of the shaft. Then on the other end. take a 2x6 with a hole drilled through it and put it on the rod. Then a few large fender washers and then a nut. Secure the drive someway and then get a rubber mallet and start hitting the 2x6. I had everything on hand other than the treaded rod.. Mind popped loose after a few hits.
