The daughters puter is running Windows ME, and her dad put a 160 GB hard drive in the machine

now, the puter fires up fine, BUT it wont hook up to the internet - and apparently the only thing he did was change the drives over, same OS

(he came back a month ago, but couldnt make it work - hes in Maine, we near philly, I think the went to maine just to run away, lol)

he sent a new Linksys USB wireless link, however, now that its installed (the old one seemed fine tho) it STILL has the same problem, cant hook to the internet. it SHOWS that the link has good link, hook is solid, but it cant get that active signal into the works itself, cant get the browsers to hook up, very frustrating to have signal in the puter but cant be used

Since she is constantly on moms puter, this creates a bit of a conflict, lol, and now she is ducking the ex daddy calls cause the thing isnt working.

The apparently RAGHEADED support crew at Linksys is of no help, not know what matter, please good bye  so ...

can any of you puter gurus out there take a stab at a walk thru on this one? Ill happy call you, dont care where in the country ya are, lol, at the next Iboats get together the beer is on me!

(and santa is bringing a SeaChest, lol)

:D :D :D :D :D :D

Re: HELP!! Puter gurus!!!!!!

If you are running wireless you need to access the router settings. This is done over the internet that the router is connected to (This is done by typing the IP number from you manual into the address box on your internet explorer). You need to make sure that the WEP encryption is disabled and that the wireless beacon is active. After you verify you are getting the internet you will need to enable the WEP encryption with some sort of password. When wep is not working you will see on the adaptor on your me system that you have sucsesfully connected to the access point but not the internet. If the me computer is hardwired via an eithenet card your problem lies elsewhere.
good luck

Re: HELP!! Puter gurus!!!!!!

I just looked up the IP address. Type 192.168.1.1 in the address area in internet explorer(do this with the computer you have internet access on) Hopefully the step dad did not change the password. If not it should be admin. Go though the different areas here and see if you can find something wrong. The main things you need to do is disable WEP, make sure you have the wireless beacon enabled and that the router channel and the adaptor on the ME computer are both the same. I believe the default is channel 6

and apparently the only thing he did was change the drives over, same OS
And should have re-installed all the current drivers and software, and configured Win to the hardware.

Chances are he forgot/missed something.

Why not start over, reformat and install fresh.
Eliminate any forgotten step(s) along the way.

A full discription of the hardware may help someone.

Ray,

America is for everyone. Don't call people "raghead". Even though the tech support couldn't help you, they are just trying to keep a job to feed their family - just like you.

Re: HELP!! Puter gurus!!!!!!

Hey Ray,

If the computer sees the device and it appears to be working, and the internet settings are correct on her computer try this:

Power down the cable modem.
Power down the wireless router.
Power down all the computers

Power up the cable modem and wait till all the connection lights light.
Then, Power up the wireless router
The power up the computers and give it a try

All this assumes you used the installation disk that come with the wireless router to add her computer to the network. If you did not do that, try that first. If you don't have it, you can probably download it from the Mfgs web site

Ray,
What model of the "Linksys USB wireless link" do you have??

I'd be happy to walk you thru the setup of your system.

If you do have a router...it's easier if it's setup for DHCP (default setting) and be sure your TCP/IP settings under Network Settings in ME are set for "Obtain an IP Address Automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address Automatically" under the TCP/IP section...

Re: HELP!! Puter gurus!!!!!!

ray- another bit of advice. i just got a new linksys router as well. was working great, i messed with the cable modem, stopped working. same frustration with linksys tech people, as well as comcast's and gateway's. then i found my problem- i simply had to push an enable button on my computer to activate the wireless chip. never knew the button existed. i felt really dumb at that point, but the system started working fine.

Re: HELP!! Puter gurus!!!!!!

ray, not to harp and it's probably not the answer, but just make sure you don't have an enable button you have to physically "push". with computers these days, we think every on/off switch is done with a mouse. in my case, it turned out my 1 year old had hit this button i never knew existed. the button, which i found out later, is to physically disable the wireless chip, and is used for when you're on a plane and don't want to screw up their coms (the computer is always looking to connect to something).

good luck-
