Hi,
We are having trouble reading the tachometer on our boat. It looks like there is over 5000 miles on this boat but can't be because it wasn't driven that much. Can someone help figure out the mileage. We want to sell it. Thanks in Advance!

Welcome.
That's an hour meter.
If someone left the key on the hours would accumulate even without the motor running.

welcome aboard.

as indicated above, the hour meter runs when ever the key is on.

there are only 168 hours in a week. so if you accumulated 5000 hours by leaving the key on it happened more than once

It's also possible that the hour meter is used and came off some other piece of machinery.
Hour meters don't normally came standard.

Hi Scott, Its a possibility. It was my Dad's boat and we inherited from him. Thank You.

the main purpose of an hour meter is to watch maintenance intervals.

Hi. All these type hour meters are good for…is for keeping an eye on service intervals. Most of them like this are fitted as an aftermarket and afterthought by the owner. If they are wired wrongly, you could be counting up hours as soon as the battery is connected, believe it or not.
One of my boats has one of these under the dash. I’ve left the ignition on a couple of times and it’s clocked up hours. The difference between it’s reading and the actual ecu recorded hours is huge.
