Help Removing Twist Grip

How do you remove the twist grip on a '88 15 hp Evinrude with ordinary tools? Need to lube the inside, but do not have the special tool the book calls for.

I dont believe any special tools are needed. If I recall, first you screw in the stop switch assembly all the way. This releases the stop switch from the twist grip. Then the twist grip has 2 little recessed tabs. They are 2 little round plastic tabs visible thru small recesses or holes on either side of the twist grip. Get 2 small screwdrivers and press in on both tabs at the same time. Also at the same time have an amigo pull the twist grip straight off. The 2 little tabs are what's holding it on. The tabs are attached to a part called the helix.

That makes sense. I looked it over more while the kids were practicing with the oars on the lake and your description fits what I was thinkin.

My Stop Switch Assy just spins forever: is it actually supposed to do something (like adjust the idle?)

If it is screwed all the way in and you continue to turn it clockwise it will spin forever. If you pull slightly on it and turn it counterclockwise it should thread itself into the twist grip (unless it's broken). I'm not certain, but I think the stop switch might also act as the idle adjustment and you do the adjustment by turning it in and out till the idle speed is correct. To remove the twist grip you want to first turn the stop switch clockwise until it is screwed all the way in and does feel like it will spin forever.

Thanks! I'll check that this evening. Does seem like the idle stop is set WAY low as when I throttle back to the stop with the twist grip it is REAL low.

Lubed it this w/e. Was not all that hard. The only thing I'd like to mention is that the one of rollers that slides up and down in the helix slots fell out when I spearated the two helix's. So be carefull when pulling things apart. Too much force and vital parst could fly away without even knowint it! Luckily I always (try to) keep a rag handy and watch for loose parts.
