That is a handsome distributor you got there! ;)

Have you looked over the procedure to installing it in the manual yet?

Hey... cover the hole in the intake from the dizzy being out with a rag so you don't drop anything down there.

just being cautious.

Ok I know why you can't find your coil like Chris posted.... it's because it is ontop of your old distributor cap. the auto HEI has the coil built in to it. I didn't see a new coil in your photos, you will also need to get a bracket for it to mount it on the intake.

Got it! Thank you! That was driving me nuts! BTW, here is the manual for the new dissy. Wait,,, how do you insert (attach) a .pdf file?

Chris, where do you recommend I order the ignition coil and a mounting bracket from (website?) Is that 72400 the right part number? Thx!

Your dizzy manual states to use the Flame thrower II coil for best results.

They make oil and expoxy filled coils.

The oil filled is the "Traditional" way to make a coil. The Epoxy are designed to be more rugged for things like off road racing or very high vibration.
looks like:
45111- epoxy filled
or
45011- oil filled

and also the bracket- PNX-10001

Re: Help replacing an automotive distributor with Marine Flamethrower Ign II

Love the taste of a few good beers... many friends make their own wine, plus this is "wine country" around NW PA and the Great Lakes, but something about wine just gives me a damn headache,,, one small glass or a bottle; don't matter; I WILL awake the next morning with a migraine from he** To each his own though;)

Oh dear!!! You and I have more in common than you realize... I'm also a migraine sufferer, and mine are 'hospital grade'... Yep, if I get a bad one, it's an ambulance trip to emergency for me... What I have found is that the biggy is sugar. If I have anything with un-caramelized sugar, next morning, a doosy... So, off the list for me are - ice-cream, any of the sugary drinks (like Coke ect), any of the concentrated fruit juices, alcoholic drinks brewed with sugar and yeast... and anything that's had sugar added (even if it doesn't say on the packaging, I'll know!!)

Yeah, completely missed the coil being part of the dissy cap  sorry about that.. I just checked and because you're using a dissy that doesn't require an 'I' terminal then any of the slave solenoids will do the job. The one on the engine looks ok, just check it has a 'MARINE' sticker on it... otherwise you could use either a 89-96054 (my preference because it has a separate ground terminal, not through the body) or a 89-76414A1...

Cheers,

Chris......

So these (pics of coil & mounting bracket) will go on the intake at those holes, right? Top of coil facing the transom? Might be a stupid question, but wth.:rolleyes:intake noted1.jpgpnx-10001_w.jpgpnx-45011.jpg

Received the delivery today on the coil & bracket... any suggestions folks for post #29? Thanks!

That doesn't sound too good, but at least you're getting out there and among it. :D I'm guessing the doctors all said "Relax, go fishing"... I'm also guessing they would all have kittens if they found out what you're doing......

Truth is, I'm not a big drinker. The last beer I had was in Norway, about 6 months ago... And only then because I was forced to drink it.... I very occasionally have a wine with dinner, but that's only about once a year too.... People ask why I don't drink, is it religion? Nope... I just don't like the taste of the stuff.... That's it....

Cheers,

Chris......

Yep, lol...relax. I really am relaxing though. I don't exert much energy too much and I just take my time...picking away at this and that. I don't lift much of anything and the service tech at the marine shop even carried the alternator, carb, and starter in and out of my vehicle for me. I am not breaking any strength or speed records for sure. Lol;)

Is the picture of the wiring harness you posted off your boat?
If not, does your boat have an ammeter on the dash or a volt meter.

On the engine harness at the round connector, could you open up the wires where they go into the plug and take a picture so we can see the wire colors? The one shown by the green arrow.

I wrapped up the boat for today, but I have one pic of that round connector... it isn't the greatest quality, but I can get a much better one with wire visibility spread out when the weather clears up. Ainstrument panel volt far left.jpgfemale round connector.jpglso, volt gauge of my instrument panel is on the far left. Please see attached pics. Thank you!

Re: Help replacing an automotive distributor with Marine Flamethrower Ign II

Those are Mercruiser gauges Chris, I've seen them on many older boats. Maybe they are US gauges and you guys down under have different types.

qwizzer, I was just looking at your fuel gauge post in the electrical forum, and your instruments and wiring diagrams.
You have the wrong wiring diagrams, the ones you have are for systems with an ammeter, and you don't have that. You have a Voltmeter. Big difference. I am also sure now that you have the BIA color coding system on your instrument panel anyway, and would hope the engine is the same.

I will post the correct wiring diagrams for your panel and engine here shortly.

Re: Help replacing an automotive distributor with Marine Flamethrower Ign II

Let's do it this way, you are going to need them anyway.
Here is the manual that covers your engine http://www.4shared.com/office/mRjamBOE/03__Engines__All__78-84.html? and includes all the wiring diagrams. in section 3F

Here is one for your outdrive too http://www.4shared.com/office/iUNMuxIG/04__Drives_120-260__78-82.html?

Already done Don... -> http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=556152&p=3819709&viewfull=1#post3819709

Ok, here are the wiring diagrams you should be using for your engine and instrument panel. I just cleaned them up a little bit and made them easier to read.

Here they are in .jpg. Click on the image about 3 times to get to full size, then download the full size image to your computer. It's a lot clearer.
