I'm about to purchase (95% sure) a 1995 SeaRay 175 bowrider that needs the carpet replaced. It has carpet on the floor and up on the sides (where there is open storage).

How is best to go about it? The only thing I could find in a search was to use Acetone to soak the carpet and then begin scraping it off. Is that basically the idea? Are SeaRay boats any different (glues, etc.) that any other brand?

I only need to replace the carpet on the floor as it is worn through. But I'd like to consider changing the color to one of the other standard SeaRay options. This would mean replacing the carpet on the sides. I'm betting this could be a real bear, eh?

Like to hear from people who've done it before and what I'm looking to get myself into. I've never feared restoration projects and elbow grease, but I also don't want to spend the whole summer replacing the carpet and not enjoying the boat. :)

I'd hold off on soaking that carpet with acetone until you try just peeling it off the deck. Acetone is nasty stuff, and you're talking about a lot of it.

It's incredibly flammable, and its fumes are very toxic.

Pull the carpet and sand off any loose residue. Re-glue over the remainder. It's a good time to inspect the flooring when it is exposed

Thanks guys. Yea, I wasn't quite sure about the Acetone deal...didn't know how it would effect the fiberglass itself.

So its just kinda like removing old vinyl flooring. Grab, pull, remove, then sand the surface smooth. Been there, done that. ;)

Doesn't sound like fun...gotta keep the big picture in mind. :)

Thanks again,

Just click on my link and you will feel all nice and fuzzy about your carpet job. It could be worse. Acetone will not eat glass. Styrene will.

Had to replace carpet in my I/O, floor was bad, sides had a little staining. it was gray in color. bought a can of home depot $.99 spray paint, hit the spots on the side carpet, when i sold it, still looked brand new.
