I just replaced my tilt/trim motor without the aid of my repair manual which is in storage 3 hours away. Everything is back in place and working but of course the oil drained out when I took off the old motor. What kind of oil do I need to use and how do I fill it? Do I need to bleed the system? I loosened the manual release screw and propped the motor up with a 2x8 to work on it. Can I just tighten that screw, put more oil in and it should work, or are there any other steps? I looked at a lot of other posts and only got bits and pieces. Hoping someone has a manual...

I have a '98 Johnson 225hp outboard, model #J225STLECS

OK, Since it is tilted up, fill it with Dextron III trans fluid, replace the fill cap and lower it down. Now tighten the manual release and start to cycle it up and down. Everytime it is up, fill it, and wait a few minutes in the up position for the air to bubble out. Eventually you will have no air and the system will be full.

Re: Help replacing tilt/trim on 98 Johnson 225

Thanks. Wasn't sure about the oil since other posts said to use motor oil. The stuff that came out of the pump was purple. Also, without a manual I'm just guessing at where the reservoir is. My pump is on the left and there is a bulbous metal housing on the right which I assume is the reservoir. There is a fill screw (?) about halfway up the side. Is the space above the screw for the air? I was assuming I'd see something with a screw on top.

No the fill is on the side (actual rear). You should see a plastic cap with a slot for a screwdriver. I think it is on the right.

This parts diagram may help. If not the ATF Dexron III, you can use BRP's TNT fluid, available at your dealer. From the colouring, it sounds as if that is what is currently being used.

That is the fill screw on the right side.Large flat screwdriver. With the motor tilted up fill and put the screw back in.Cycle it up and down about 5 times then recheck the fluid level with the motor fully tilted. It is self purging..
