Simple question. do you need a stator in order for spark to be produced in the starting process of a boat? We are currently arguing tthe purpose of a stator. One of us says it creates spark and the other says its a primitive charging system.

The stator on those engines is for charging only, has nothing to do with the ignition system.

Your thinking of the stator in a outboard application. They are used to providing the power for the ignition packs and recharge the battery

No, he's asking about the stator in a 164 4cyl. I/O. as noted in the title of the thread. and in that engine, the stator is only for charging.

It's also a good idea to remove the stator when converting to an alternator. If you leave it in, and a magnet comes loose and catches the stator, all kinds of things get ugly.
