Ok, your gonna have to explain this again. I just got given an old, I think 7.5hp evinrude kicker. The pull cord was unwound that's all there is to do. So I have a good spring and now how the heck do I load this thing in. Cap side first, bottom side first? Knot through the bottom then wrestle the spring? I'm just not getting this thing. any help will do. The only numbers anywhere on this thing are on the bottom cylender and it's on a small metal camp and has the number, 0358437. thanks.

I can give you detailed instructions, but before I type all that stuff in vain, I need to know what recoil you have.

Does it mount on top of the moror, over the flywheel?

Does it have a single plastic pawl to engage the flywheel, or 3 metal ones?

Or is it something else?

Re: help rewind my pull cord!!!!!

That was for replacing a rope that had not broken. Your question is replacing the recoil spring.
1. Safety first. That spring can jump out like an angry snake. Wear eye protection and gloves. And a suit of armor. heh, heh.
1.5 Find a pin or nail to fit the small hole in the pulley. This will hold the wound-up spring from recoiling. (See the rope replacement link)
2. Remove the retaining ring and pawl & links as an assembly. Remove the screw holding the center hub and remove it and the rope pulley.
3. Whap the housing on the floor, legs down. The old spring should come out. If the new spring is wound up, unclip it and throw it across the room to unwind.
3. Place the eyelet at the outer end of the spring over the pin in the housing. Now wind the spring into the housing (counter-clockwise) like coiling up a garden hose. Smear a goodly amount of grease on it.
4. Put pulley in the housing, entering the pin in the spring eyelet.
5. Lube and reinstall the center hub and pawl.
6. Wind the spring all the way up by turning the pulley. WARNING! Do not let it get away from you and go flying back (unwind). That will wreck your new spring.
7. Once wound all the way up, back it off one complete turn and install a pin in the hole to hold it. (See the link for replacing the rope)
8. Feed the rope in, and install the handle.
9. Holding onto the rope, remove the pin and let the pulley slowly rewind.
