Help! Running Fine-4hrs-then No Start-tow -in-???

THX FOR READING PALS...I HAVE A '89 4CYL 3.0 MERC ENGINE. has ran very well for a few years. (16' invader) one day we were wakeboarding all day and then she didn't want to start! and when i tried i felt gears THRASHING eachother!! how can my boat be perfect for years or hours and be so f876ked after a few?? do i need my local boat DR.?? ANY RECCOMMENDATIONS IN THE 94509-94531??? THX

Me if i were on the west coast nobody would touch it but Don s. Send him a PM and beg him to fix it. What he charges would be worth every penny.

To the question as WHY people have asked that for century's my reply CHIT happens.

But maybe the drive is locking up your motor, quit trying to start it unless you pull the drive first.

Sorry about your troubles your actually very lucky that he's on the west coast.

gears from where? the drive, starter to fly wheel gears?

that's the way boats are i think. while i'm no pro. i can think of one thing that changes like that from one day to the next. water intrusion, hydolock. how's your engin oil and engine oil level look?
when i had a bad manifold, my first sign i was in trouble was on the lake with a hard start problem. over working the starter trying to turn the engine over and compress water, which don't compress..

1. Take the spark plugs out and see if there is water on any of the plugs.
2. Crank the engine over and see if water comes out of the plug holes.
3. Either using a remote starter on the starter or have a friend turn the engine over while you listen for where the sound is coming from.

You could bring it to me for repair, but that 800 mile (one way) tow could cost more than the repair.

Worth the drive to get it right.

Know someone nearer him that you know will not take advantage of him?

Bunch of butchers out there, will cost him more in the long run if someone else does it. And still not get it right.
