I just bought a 150qt cooler that is pretty big. What i would like to do is take like 3/4 of it and use it for fish i catch, use the other 1/4 for like my food or drinks. There is like slots i can put a piece of hard plastic in.The slots are like 3/4 of an inch wide but not to deep so i must use some type of glue to hold them in tight. What type of material or hard plastic can i use to make a border between the fish i catch and my drinks, also what type of glue should i use that will hold up in ice or water?Like a liquid nails, silicone,or what type of glue can i use.Has anyone done this before? If yes what did they use, what type of glue also? Thanks for any help. Can i get what i need at home depot or lowes?

I'd use a cutting board and 3M 5200 it in place. Cut the board down to fit, caulk the edges with the 5200, throw a damp towel into the cooler and let it sit over night, the 5200 will be cured in the morning. I would do 2-3 applications of 3m 5200 as it will run if applied too thick.

I bought a large cutting board at Sams Club that would do the trick, cost $10.

I had a 2" crack in the bottom of my 100qt cooler, a good dab of 3M 5200 and it's been sealed up for a couple years.

Have to concur with Bondo. What about just putting the consumables in a little cooler or cooler bag and sticking it in the 150 quart beast?

I agree.
Two seperate coolers. If worst comes to worst, leave the drinks in the cooler with the fish. You can always rinse off the drink can. Food, yuk

Why bother cementing the divider into the cooler?
Use a board style divider like a weir, re-locatable from slots to slots to suit the need.
Makes it easier to clean it out too.

That's just flavoring :D

I always use my coolers for fish-food-drinks-fish-food-drinks-fish-food-drinks. Not all at the same time, but I don't care if the ol' fish cooler has drinks in it.

My WIFE on the other hand... She has learned to "sniff" any cooler I bring her and usually turns down the one I hand her. ICK, this one smells like FISH! (SO!?!...)

Plastic cooler's seem to absorb and retain fish smells :(

I have another idea...........use the 150 quart for beer and beverages and put the fish on an overboard stringer. :D Hmmmmm how much beer will the 150 qt hold??? Sounds like a great test for the Winter months.

You must have a sweet and loving wife, mine would take that cooler and shove it up my backside!

Two coolers solves this issue quickly and effectively.

I always travel with a cooler for food and or fish and a cooler for drinks. If we caught anything it went on the ice when we were ready to go and hopefully we finished lunch from the cooler with food.

The 150 quart cooler will hold a pony keg and a lot of ice. Use salt on the ice to make it colder than normal. Install a small tap into the side. Buy your fish at the restaurant precooked and served at your table.

If you want to separate the cooler (which I have done and it doesn't affect the taste of anything), use 1/2" starboard, cut to size. Seal with 3M 5200 in the cooler grooves and another bead as caulking after the first stuff cures. Should also be water tight if done correctly and the side can be used for dry goods, such as bread, burger buns, cheese, etc.

Re: Help seperating a cooler

You know i kind of like the idea of maybe getting a smaller cooler and just sticking it inside of the bigger one. That would solve any problems i have and nothing would get hurt.To bad though i don't drink beer only water.I bought the cooler that big to save room in my boat.I have a 1442 no center seat alumacraft and it is 42" at the bottom and this cooler is 40 inches wide at the bottom. If i were to buy 2 seperate 48qt coolers it would take up over 50 inches that won't fit side by side so that is why i bought this one so i can seperate the food and fish. But what i will do is find a nice little 28qt cooler and just stick my food in it and in ther big cooler.I don't care about my bottles of water getting a little fishey as i can wipe them down in the salt water. That is a smart idea.If that doesn't work right then i will go with the border to seperate them.See i use a 10 gallon water cooler from home depot for my bait and man i got to tell you that is the best bait well i have ever had for $39.It has the little spicket on the bottom of the cooler that i can drain older saltwater out every few hrs and refill it at the top to keep the bait swimming in constant fresh water with a pump of course. That will also be on the boat so 3 coolers would just be to much for me.I am going to try the small cooler in the big cooler tomorrow and see how it goes.

Man you have your priorities all screwed up!!

Wait a minute..... I thought the big cooler would hold the brews and the little cooler would hold the fish. I'm afraid Lipp's right for once, boater. Just not sure about you now.;)

You're probably thinner and wealthier than the rest of us then. That said, I love good root beer. There's a local brewery that makes it here. Anyone off the street can come in and buy all they want, but sadly they don't bottle it for some reason. The hotel bar across the street makes a mean root beer float with it.:)
