that's the thing, it isn't the wiring. the way the grooves are on the helix, the gear only can spin clockwise and go up, then it spins counterclockwise as it goes back down. i am not using a battery or any electricity, i am rotating it by hand trying to figure this out. I flipped the gear and the grooves upside down and they do the same thing, only turn clockwise on the way up. if i turn the gear counterclockwise it goes down until it won't turn anymore. I know it is supposed to go counterclockwise on the way up because of the wear on the flywheel teeth. I am totally stumped by this.

If you are able to turn the end plate with the brushes 180 deg or the brushholder 180 deg or reverse wiring to brushed it will probably counterrotate. You must have changes something, as it worked once.

I think you have things mechanically correct but maybe electrically incorrect, f4igrad. The helix does cause the drive gear of the motor to go up (the gear itself is going up clockwise when you do it by hand with a stationary shaft but the electric starter, when engaged electrically, drives the raised gear counterclockwise during the starting cycle). The starter shaft itself is turning counterclockwise so that it turns the flywheel clockwise as the gear engages he drive teeth as you look down on the engine. When the motor starts, the speed of the flywheel overruns the speed of the starter motor and the drive gear disengages as the current is released. As said above, the wires do need to be properly connected with the positive brushes attached to the large terminal and wire coming from the solenoid and the negative brushes to ground. The flywheel does indeed turn clockwise and is only to be turned counter when determining the top dead center for a piston when performing ignition timing work. Hope this helps.

if i'm not mistaken, the starter spins counter clockwise, inorder to turn the engine clockwise. if the polarity on a direct current motor is reversed the motor runs in reverve.

ok, I got it fixed and took it out. everything was great, the engine ran fine, but then the boat started taking on water. evidently there is a leak somewhere that I didn't patch correctly. I am done with this boat, it is for sale. I will take the money from it and put it towards a newer boat that I can actually enjoy instead of stress out again and again.

Thanks for all of your help though, I do appreciate it!
