I have a few questions for everyone.

I have just purchased a 1980 Chris Craft Scorpion 260 (maybe its a 230). Has a Mercruiser 260, 350. Is there a place online I can figure out exactly what parts I need and such? For instance, I want to do the following, and instead of going to a Marina and paying much more, I'd like to figure what I need and just go to West Marine and buy it myself.

Tune Up
Oil Change
Best Batteries To Use
Water Pump (should I rebuild, or replace or repair or what?)

The boat hasn't been ran since 2005. We put a new battery in it and it fired right up! I have video of it LOL it really surprised me. But with that being said, what else do I need to do before even think of dropping in the water? We are also going to check all of the lighting, replace fuel lines, suck out all old fuel and replace with fresh. Anything else?

Thanks so much for all of your help. I love this forum!

Well shopping there is the worst for prices.... the worst! Welcome to iboats!

Take a look in the iboats store http://www.iboats.com/Boat-Parts-Accessories/dm/

Yes pump out the old fuel..... use it in the lawnmower or a fire!

Best battery...... uhhh many people use walmart batteries w/o problems.... I use interstate myself.

Tune up, oil change and impellar are all DIY items WITH a proper manual. We have the maintenance manuals here for DL http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=1693398#post 1693398

We will guide you through just about everything. The toughest learning curve is the impellar ;)

Check out and do the trailer wheel bearings at least repack them and check your tires too....... or you may not make it to the water.

iboats will save you ton's of money!

You mentioned you started it in the driveway. Did you use muff and the garden hose? If not you need an impeller for sure and maybe a new housing if you ran it more than or close to a minute.

Good luck with your boat, and remember help is just a few clicks away.

Thanks guys so much for the feedback so far.

Yes, we had the "mouse ears" on there hooked up to the hose. I can upload my video of it if someone can tell me how (sorry for being such a newbie to the forum, and to the boat).

So, with the impeller, should I just replace the impeller, or get the whole repair kit or what would you think is best?

What is the best oil to use, how much oil does mine take and should I order online, or just a local Wal-mart or something? Should it be a sythetic blend due to the age (if there is even such a thing for marine)?

These may be answered after the download completes on the manuals. They are taking forever to download for some reason.

The guy at West Marine told me that I don't need wires since it fired up. Is that true? I figured for as long as it sat, and who knows how long before that since they've been changed that I should change them.

Also, below is a list of the parts I'm looking at getting and the part numbers. Could someone double check and make sure that I'm ordering the right parts? A few of the parts I had questions if it is the right one or not.

Tune Up Kit - I am unable to find a match
Fuel Filter Part # 18-7869
Oil Filter Part # 9-57811
Spark Plug Wire Set Part # 18-8804
Spark Plugs Part # BPR6FS

West Marine is insane on prices!

Oil,use straight 30 weight.Found at any auto parts store.
I use the Rotella brand.
The oil filter can be crossed to ant name brand filter...I use Purolator myself.
The spark plugs use AC brand MR43T
The plug wires can be found here on Iboats or ebasicpower.com for half of what West Marine sells them for.

On the impeller, if the case (gaskets, ect) are in good shape you can just change the impeller. If the case is scored (pitted, ect) then order the kit.

You really can do better on prices than west marine (Iboats is amazing on how fast they ship parts imho).

Any oil is ok (30 weight or synthetic) what ever you like to use is fine.

I would tend to think if it didn't miss or arc, the plug wires are ok, but if you do change them it gives you a good start on routine maintenance (a baseline of what has been done). If you are going that far into it I'd change the cap too.

Ummm, West Marine matches internet pricing, so not sure how you guys are saying they are terrible. :)

I know this forum is part of Iboats, and we should support them(I do) but I also shop at WM because of convenience when I need something NOW.

Gaskets, and the quad ring should NEVER be reused.

NAPA will get the parts the next day for you, too. They won't charge you shipping either since they want to get your business. Thats the way it was for me, anyway. :) Just give them the part #'s and you should be set.

Re: Help/Starter/Beginner/Part/ETC

Hi Everyone... I am brand spanking new to this site,, at the age of 64,, wow that went fast ! So here I am with a boat I couldn't say no to ( my first ever),, a 87 Renken, with a 3.8 engine and I got it all (boat, motor and trailer) for 800 bucks. But the interior was stripped out by the previous owner.. so here is my questions,,, I am quite mechanically equipped, but I have no knowledge of boat mechanisms and such. Is the 3.8 omc a chevy V6? I also need a service manual for the engine, and the outdrive if that is what you call it. The gears that drive the prop when it goes down, are sure cupped thin, and when I hook the water up to it, water comes out at that gear as well as other places,, is that to lubricate the gear, so its not dry when it meshes up with other one? And I'll bet to replace that rubber boot is a so and so of a job! I drained the gas,, installed new fuel hose, new interstate battery,, and after some cranking she fired up,,,,,yeaaaaa.. That gear I talked about sound noisy until I lowered the outboard section then it was queit. See I don't even know how to use it. So here I am knowing nothing, and needing everything hehehehe.,,,,thanks guys,,,,be gentle, I'm getting old
