Have an '87 4hp evinrude that has been used in salt water (not by me though). Am trying to get the lower unit off to change out the impeller and it seems to be stuck.

I have soaked this thing liberally with PB blaster for the past two weeks and have even resorted to tapping with wooden block. No go.

This particular motor had neutral and reverse only. I am thinking I'm missing something in the disassembly procedure, but my combined shop manual does not give a parts breakdown for this particular motor. Should have gotten the parts manual instead i guess.

There is no access port for disconnecting the drive shaft as there is on the larger OMC's.

Anyone have any experience with this motor??

Any help greatly appreciated.

wile e have you removed the prop....thrust washer....and hub retainer? this allows you to remove the prop drive shaft out the back of the skeg...thereby allowing your lower unit to drop down ( if this is the unit i remember )

Hi Wilecoyote,
Being that your motor was used in salt, you may have a driveshaft stuck in the crankshaft issue to deal with. You may have to pry the unit off with wooden wedges, which is likely to pull the driveshaft out of the unit in the process. Then you'll need to pull the powerhead to remove the driveshaft from the crankshaft. I've used a pair of Vice-Grips on the driveshaft in a non-bearing wear area and then tap it out with a hammer. If the splines are still present you may be able to clean things up and reassemble without any other problems. Be sure to use a waterproof grease in the splines and make sure that upper o-ring is present and in good shape.
- Scott
