We bought a new left over 2008 Maxum 1900SR3 in August of 2009. Have put 186 hours on it with NO issues. Very pleased with its performance, build quality and are essentially very satisfied with it. But, we have a little case of the infamous dreaded 'itis disease. On a whim we looked at a new 2011 Regal 2220 RX FasDeck with a VP 5.7 GI 300 HP DP today. Actually wanted to see a Regal 2100 but the dealer doesn't have any in stock yet. So, he is "pushing; the 2220 RX. Dealer will give us almost what we paid for the Maxum in trade - only 1,000 less than what we paid for it (so much for the always mentioned "new boat big depreciation" factor)! And, he has dramatically reduced the cost of the new boat by nearly 30% after an afternoon of negotiations with rebates / incentives, etc.. Wasn't looking for a deck boat but this is not the typical deck boat look or ride. I am going to test drive it this week to make sure it handles and performs how I want it to. Obviously, it is a lot more boat than we have now but is also a lot more money. So, someone talk me out of this!! Does anyone have first hand knowledge of the 2011 Regal 2220 RX? Pro's con's? Do not want this to become a buy used or buy new debate (I am one to always buy new). Just want to know if I am foolish to spend a lot of money for a new boat, when I am essentially satisfied with my current boat (which isn't too old and in great shape). Thanks for taking the time to read this post and for any responses. Oh, and I should mention that the admiral really likes the Regal and is up for it - it is me who is not convinced. Again, I need to be talked out of this guys so please help.....LOL.

Thanks again.

Buy it +1, Men are never satisfied with what they have, if you want it and can afford it then get it, if you decide not to you WILL regret it every time you go out on your current boat.

Re: Help talk me out of it.....

Buy it! I have had my boat for three years and am very happy with it, BUT, I look at boat sales 1-2x's per week. Maybe something with a head, maybe something that we could sleep on, Maybe something in the 35' range. I can't make it stop.
If you like boating now, and you must with 186 hours in two years. Go with the bigger boat and you can bring more friends with you. Good Luck.

Is your Current boat Paid for. Are you financing the New one.

I like boating free and clear from any banks.

The Regal is a WAY better constructed boat than your Maxum, you're fortunate to have been trouble free. For the minimal cost differential, I'd jump on the Regal while your Maxum is bringing good trade value.

I'm kinda' with the minority crowd here ... no problems with the Max, you're having a great time & no banks involved. Why fix what ain't broke.

If money is no object, go for it ... and good for you, 'cause I haven't made it there yet.

Thanks for the replies guys. Still undecided. Now, the dealer is finding some Regal 2100's for my consideration (which is the model I liked at the boat show) from around the country since he knows I am still undecided on the 2220 Deck Boat model. Decisions, decisions......but....these are the ones that I like having to make...........

And even if you want the 21 don't admit it and don't act it. If you love it the salesman will work you over for all the $.

I am not going to tell you what to do by any means but getting a trade in offer of only $1K less than the purchase price for a 2 year old boat with 186 hours sure is convincing if you know what i mean.

Wish I was having to make the same decision as you. LOL!!!

Re: Help talk me out of it.....

The "$1,000.00 less than you paid" offer for your boat isn't realistic. Think about it. Is anyone going to pay that much for a used, 2 year old boat? NO !!! The figure for your boat is inflated with some of the $$$ mark up from the new boat. If you were buying straight out, the price of the new boat would be WAY less than it is now. I don't intend to sound negative, but I've always shook my head at the way people see a trade and the figures involved. The only "concern" is the BOTTOM LINE. How much does it cost you to own the new boat and is it worth it to YOU !!!! You're the one paying for it.

These figures are just for example.
new boat $30,000.00
trade in $20,000.00
difference $10,000.00

new boat $25,000.00
trade in $15,000.00
difference $10,000.00

New boat can be sold for $25,000.00. Best case scenario, sell your boat and buy new boat at lower price. Again, these figures are just for example.

I fully understand your thoughts. While I am not a salesman, I negotiate for a living. I know how it all works. If he is giving me a "great" trade in figure, he is not discounting the cosy of the new boat as much as he otherwise would. However, what you are missing is this......I bought my boat new for X (it was a great deal, trust me). Now, two years and 186 hours later, a DEALER is prepared to give me Y for it and Y is NADA average "retail" value. Because of the deal i got when I bought it -X -, along with the fact that I have kept is spotless and well maintained, the current average retail (which the dealer is giving me on the trade works out to be only 1,000.00 less than I paid for it). Again, I know that dealers don't usually give "retail" on a trade so he is not discounting the new boat as much as he otherwise would. But, he is discounting the new boat by about 30% in ADDITION to giving me retail on the trade. I realize he isn't losing money (or giving the new boat away for nothing) BUT I think it is all together a great deal. That is my dilemma.

Thanks to all who have responded. And, I am still on the fence.....

Re: Help talk me out of it.....

Consider this:
Is the Regal a better product than the Maxum? Yes
Are you lucky to have not had any issues with the Maxum yet? Yes
Are you happy with the numbers? Sounds like it
Can you afford it? I assume so or we should not be having this discussion

So.......................... just buy it!

I stepped up from a Maxum to a Regal, once you test it you will not think twice. Have fun with the new boat.

We are very happy with our 2011 2220. The extended swim platform is huge and being at the waterline is great when parked at a cove.
