I have a 1976 25 hp Johnson. I cranked it the other day and it was idling way too high.Today I disconnected the throttle cable from thr motor, and tried to move the lever that goes to the carb. The levers would move with considerable force, but I would think they are way too tight. Also, it does't look like the throttle valve on the carb is closing all of the way. Would this be my problem with the idling ? The throttle valve will move fine with finger pressure.

Thanks

valleyz
Now disconnect the cable from the control box and let us know how the lever works. My guess is a bad cable.
DHPMARIN

Hi valley
Is your motor a tiler model or is it controled remote? DHP was tring to find out if your problem was in the control box or the cable it's self. This asumes that your running remote. If you rigged for tiller maybe the twist grip need attention. If your throtle valve does not close all the way it will affect your idle.

'kay. The throttle butterfly should be closing all the way. If it's standing open, it would cause a high idle. Check all the linkages, both throttle and spark advance for rust, corrosion or binding. Lubricate all the points that look like they should be lubed.

c/6
Hooty

I figured out today that if you put the motor in gear, the throttle control levers will move easier :D . Now, I still have the high idle problems. Tomorrow I am going to crank the motor again and disconnect the throttle control cable, and control the throttle by hand. This should tell me if it is the cable. Could some kinda air leak cause the high idle ??

Is the control a two lever control?

c/6
Hooty

Hi Valley
Your control box should have two knobs along with the levers. One knob adjusts the idle stop. This keeps the lever from returning all the way back. The other knob is a friction adjustment. It applys friction to the throtle lever to hold it in place. So it stays were you put it.

My boat mechanic found the problem today. The throttle valve lever adjustment was loose, and had slipped. He went ahead and cleaned the carb out too. Now I'm ready to go fishing :D
