Trying to get my OMC outdrive on my 2.3 Bayliner Capri. I can get the shaft in the engine but cant get the whole unit to go all the way on. I am about 1.75" off from being all the way on.
I was thinking maybe something to do with the u joints.

Any tricks, advice??

Thanks
Matt

The rubber seal swells up and it's a task-and-a-half to get the U-joint piece to pass by. I use a long thin rod or screwdriver to fit between the joints to spin them while pushing the drive on.

Actually the bellows is too small for the coupler on the u-joint shaft.

If you can get the splines to engage with the engine coupler, clicking the starter helps sometimes.

I'm guessing your boat is a 1986 or 1987.Those are the worst.

DHP

The screw driver technique works well on my 1986 Cobra. It takes me all of 15 seconds and it's on. Jiggle and turn as WillB has said and it will slip right in.

If the alignment isn't dead on, u can fight it for days, & it still won't go. Cobra's of that vintage are notorious for this issue. I went thru this last year on my '87. Trust me, I know what I'm talking about. Get it lined up.
