Hello experts,

I've offered to help a neighbor whom owns a 1984 21ft. Sunrunner with a 225D volvo penta No.CU41452.

He was running the boat at troll speed when it stalled out, it started and stalled out again than refused to start. He open the engine compartment and said it looked like someone poured a latai all over the motor. He was pulled off the lake and brought the boat home. I went and brought it to my place and pulled the dipstick knowing what I would find was water in the oil pan. I drained the pan and got about 3 1/2 gallons of water and maybe 2 quarts of oil, damn near a 5 gallon bucket full.

My question is what would cause the oil in the pan? What cubic inch is the 225D 350 or 305 GM motor? I noticed when searching other topics they stated (305 cubic inch). Can a regular gm 305/350 motor replace the 225D or are the heads and blocks different.

I'm going to flush the engine with diesel fuel several times and add fresh oil and do a compression test on the 8 cylinders.

It has a cracked block. Wasn't winterized properly.

As stated, It's most likely a cracked block.

the AQ225d is a 305. I suggest replacing it with a 350. Make sure the new block is of the same vintage with the correct main seal (one piece or two). the blocks and heads are the same.

Re: Help Volvo Penta 225D Water In The Oil Pan

Well I flushed/pickled the engine today about 4 times with diesel fuel. I added oil and fired it up for a brief 5 seconds.

If or when I pull the motor I was wondering can a regular GM 350/305 blk out of an automobile be used or is the 225D blk a special marine blk. I have rebuilt several GM motors but never a marine motor. They sure look the same from the outside. Someone told me the marine motors are special coated, have stainless steel rings and a special crank. So basically no 10:1 compression with a RV cam.

What would be the outdrive on the 84 Sunrunner? would it be a AQ280 drive? I need to replace the transom shield since there is damage to the trim piston area. I need a part# for the transom shield to see what other drives would also work or use the same transom shield.

The neighbor offered the boat to me today for $500 I said I would sleep on it and let him know. The trailer is worth $600 and the lower end is worth at least $1500 what do you think. Do it or walk away. I do also have a 350 blk in my shop ready to go. This boat is really nice but one big SOB for the little water holes in our area.

Thanks guys for the responses.

I got my answer on the engine blk replacement from reading the thread Auto vs. Marine motor assemblies?

Very interesting thread.

Re: Help Volvo Penta 225D Water In The Oil Pan

Ok I need help with identifying the lower unit. The number on the metal tag of the VOlvo Penta lower unit is PZNR28154710 B I have searched the web and came up blank. I also talked with the local dealer and came up empty. The motor is a Volvo Penta 225D with a tag No. CU41452 It seems these numbers are not in the system so where else can I look for information. Like I stated above I'm in need of a transom shield so I need to figure out what lower unit I have to get the correct part number.

pics go a long way, otherwise check the manual for pics. you only have a couple different options.
