Help! volvo trim & tilt Problem

I have a volvo 290 mounted on an albemarle. Using the three button switch, the down works fine but both the trim button and the up buttons raise the drive completely up, no trim stop. The system has the black box under dash with two relays at the transom. The relays check out fine. Where do I go from here?
Luckydawg

You should have another set of relays under the helm, or the black box itself is faulty.
Are the numbers/pointer on the gauge working, and do you have a digital gauge with red and green lights.

I have no gauges and the black box is the only piece of equipment behind dash. The wiring harnesses go from dash to rear of boat, no other relays.
Thanks for your reply!

Trust me, you have 2 more relays either under the helm or very close buy. I think that harness with the relays is 2 - 3 feet long and gets tucked away by some boat manufacturers.

Re: Help! volvo trim & tilt Problem

Hi guys, me again,
Just spent a couple of sweaty hours tracing wires, and boy am I baffled. I followed all leads from both black box and switch completely thru boat. There are only the two relays at transom just before motor. I did find two female plugs in harrness that look like they would hold relays, but i know for afact they were never there. ,also in that harness one of the wires was jumped onto itself ( Blue, same color as empty plug wires). one more thing, the black box has two symbols on it and one says dp 5 degrees and the other says sp 12 degrees.
I'm lost, the system used to work and I haved tested everything I can. I THINK!

I don't see how it worked before, without those 2 relays. The bypass wire between the blue wires is energized with the relay when you want to go above the trim limit. With it bypassed, and no relay in the other, you just have one operation and no limit.

Don,
Thank you for all your input. Thought I might jury rig some jumpers between the empty trim relay plugs to see if I can stop outdrive at trim level. Sounds to me that you have these volvos down pat. Any ideas for this jumper idea, before I purchase relays
not so Luckydawg

The relays and black box all that wiring and the potentiometer on the transom all work together to make it work they way it's supposed to. Without all of it together you have an up button and a down button.
I usually get one or 2 boats per season that the trim system goes bad on and usually just jumper the relay so they can use the boat and then fix it right in the off season.

Re: Help! volvo trim & tilt Problem

I think I figured it out. The former owner must have pushed the up button just a bit, then pushed both buttons to make it look like the tilt and trim worked. Shame on me for being duped. Any way the dash relays had been removed and the blue wires jumped to each other to make the tilt work. At this point should I get new relays and give it a try, or assume the sending unit was bad, causing this jury rigging?
