Ok, let me warn ya first, this is being hooked up on a 2000 Johnson 55hp commercial outboard. Engine was manual everything when I bought it, start, tilt/trim, steer. I've converted it to console and remotes, CMC TnT, and the last thing I'm trying to hook up is an electric start. I don't care if it's electric choke and all that, I just want the starter option. I have the kill switch lanyard to stop the motor. I got a full harness from a used outboard, complete with starter, solenoid, keyswitch, and the huge red canon plug (which I don't need and believe I can't use anyways). Person who sold it to me already removed it from the boat, so I don't know which wires went where. All I need to know is how to wire the switch, solenoid, and battery. I have purchased OMC battery cables due in a few days, and will be making the wiring for the smaller wires, but I need to know what goes to what. I tried a search, but since this is a bit of a mix and match, I was not clear on what goes to what for my situation.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

Re: Help wiring keyswitch to starter and solenoid and battery

Well, I'll try to help out, I hope this is going to make sense. I'm looking at my factory manual, these are pretty much standard:

In the off position the two terminals labeled "M" are connected. One of those M terminals goes to ground, the other goes to the black/yellow wire which kills the ignition (this same wire goes to the safety kill switch)

In the ON position the "B" and "A" terminals are connected. The B terminal gets 12 volts from the engine on the red/purple wire and the A terminal is connected to the purple wire which sends 12 Volts to whatever needs it.

In the START position the B terminal is connected to both the S and A terminal. The S terminal is connected to the yellow/orange wire which first goes to the neutral safety switch, then to the solenoid.

And finally when you push in the B and C terminals are connected, the C terminal is connected to the white/purple wire which goes to the primer solenoid.

Re: Help wiring keyswitch to starter and solenoid and battery

Thanks for the reply. My problem is, the engine has no wiring for the starter circuit at all, and the keyswitch is not a factory OMC one. It has labels on the bottom of IGN, BAT, and ACC, and one that is unlabeled, which I'm gonna assume is a ground. I just need to know what wires need to make, and where to run them/connect them on both the battery, switch, and solenoid.

Re: Help wiring keyswitch to starter and solenoid and battery

This is by no means the proper way to do it, but it will work.
Solenoid=2 large posts, one from positive side of battery, other side to starter. 2 small posts, since you don't have a safety switch run one side to a good ground, the other comes from the starter switch.
Switch=you don't really have to have a key switch, can use a push button type switch.
Key switch=a wire from battery positive, look for a bat terminal on switch, a wire to the starter solenoid, look for a S terminal on switch.
If you use a push button, make sure you get a good one, not one of those cheapy ones, just connect the battery wire to one side and the wire to the solenoid to the other side.
Since you are going to use the kill seitch to shut it down, thats all you need. You could wire it to shut off with the key, but would have to run extra wires.
Make sure you hook up the negitave battery cable to a good ground on the engine.
Understand that wiring the engine like this bypasses ALL safety devices and will allow the engine to start in gear and at any throttle setting. You will not have any way to charge the battery using the engine.

I don't know where it came from. It's only going to be used to operate the starter, I'm going to keep the kill switch separate and use that to kill the motor.

Just wanted to say thanks to the guys who replied. I got it all hooked up today after having to go find a few misc. items I did not have on hand... one nut for the solenoid, and smaller ring terminals to connect the wiring I had to make. Works great.
