Help with 15hp Gamefisher (Force)

I have a 1996 15hp gamefisher outboard that I just purchased a week ago. We saw it run and then after buying it took it to the river. It ran great for 15 minutes pushing my jon boat to a great speed. Then it started to bog down to where it shut off and wouldn't start back up. We figured it was a carb issue from sitting a while but the mechanic said it was the water impeller. We got the new impeller and it started up and ran great in a bucket. Once we took it to the lake, however, it would start and idle but shut off when put in gear and revved to slower than idling speeds. We then experimented with water levels in a bucket and found that it will run in gear at top speed when the water level is below the screw that says vent but will shut off when put in gear when the water is above the vent. It will idle and rev in neutral with the high water but not run in gear. In the lake it is impossible to keep the motor that high in the water and it ran at that water level when we first got it. I don't know much about outboard motors so any help would be greatly appreciated. Could the mechanic who fixed the impeller screwed the vent too tight when he put the bottom end back together? Once again, thanks to anyone that can help.

I could be wrong, but I believe that your engine is a re-baged Force/Chrysler. Might try posting a picture

I'm not sure. The guy advertized it as a mercury gamefisher and everything I read says to take it to a mercury dealer but like you said i've heard they are made by force so I don't really know but here is a picture if it helps.

Yep, it's a re-baged Force. Although Mercury did put their Quicksilver electronics and lower units on them to get them to run better, they are still essentually, a Force/Chrysler engine. Would probably get better answers in the Force/Chrysler section

Very simple answer here.If your impeller failed, you ran the motor hot, causing serious damage.Do or have a compression check done and find out the damage.if compression checks out ok,then come back and your problem will be diagnosed further.PS,ALWAYS CHANGE THE IMPELLER WHEN YOU GET A USED MOTOR! I dont care if they tell you they changed it 15 min. before you showed up,change it.

I will definately check the compression but it just seems wierd that it will run in gear completely normal with the water below the screw labeled vent but bogs down only when put in gear when the water is above that vent.

Re: Help with 15hp Gamefisher

sounds to me you have bad gas in your personal tank. Did you run the motor off the same tank at the dealer and on your boat? If you did, well then you probable did over heat it. the waterlevel on the lower unit isn't going to change how it runs.

Re: Help with 15hp Gamefisher

It is the exact same tank. And I know it sounds weird but I tested it myself. In the bucket with the water below that vent it ran fine but when I filled the bucket the whole way and it was above the vent it bogged down when put into gear. In the lake we put all of the weight in the bow to lift the motor as high as possible and we got it to run until I moved back to the center of the boat and the motor sank a little in the water. I know that whatever is wrong has to do with the water level on the motor, but I just have no idea as to what it is.

Re: Help with 15hp Gamefisher

please post in FORCE forum. They will know more about your motor. But i highly suspect that theyll also"know"that water height on lower unit will affect NOTHING engine running related.Unless,of course, those force jobs integrated a"flux capacitor"professionally installed by Dr. Emmett Brown, that is low on plutonium!!!!!!

Re: Help with 15hp Gamefisher

I'd check compression. If you have the water level to the vent screw on the lower unit, then you are probably uncovering the exhaust port and making it easier for the engine to run, no back pressure from the exhaust being submerged. Other than that, the water level does not make any sense.

I have a 7.5 Gamefisher/Force (detuned version of your outboard) and it slips into gear easily, there really isn't that much resistance when the prop it turning at idle speed. My outboard needs to be warmed up for a minute before shifting into gear for it to run right and not die, kind of cold blooded, but after it's warmed up, it hauls a**.

Have you changed the plugs? This might be worth a look as I've fixed rough running problems with a plug change.

I doubt this will fix your problem, but I'd look at putting a fuel pump kit into it, ethanol is hard on those old rubber parts, not designed for ethanol.

Oh yeah, how much oil are you adding to the fuel?

I completely agree with you on the ethanol. We always try to run ethanol free gas in all our engines because of its destructive nature. As for the oil mixture we run 50:1 which is what it suggests on the motor.

Monark... I have a 85hp force, and had almost the same issues as you.. I never thought to check the height of the water, but in the yard, on the ears, it ran great, as soon as we put it in the water, it ran in neutral, but would stall as soon as we put it in gear.

We replaced all the fuel lines, replaced the fuel pump, then took it to the marina to have it checked out..

I had really bad gas, and real dirty carbs... drained gas, cleaned carbs, and now she runs beautifully

All adjustments should be done in water to perform how they should.

I'm pretty sure the guy checked the carb but we are going to take it back to him to check the compression. If that checks out ok then i'll show him these posts and see what he has done and what he needs to check.

I'm having the compression checked today but I have no idea what it should be. If anyone knows please let me know. Thanks

Sounds strange. Do you know if the motor was stored inside? What part of the country are you in?

It was stored in a garage as far as I know but judging by the decals I can tell that it spent some days outside or he used it a lot. We are in central Pennsylvania.

I'm curious about the picture you posted. The same picture is currently posted on EBay classifieds for a 1996 gamefisher 15 for sale in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Not a similar picture, the same picture. Must be a coincidence since the owner of the one listed on EBay told me yesterday that it ran great with no issues. Saw it today, it had issues similar to yours. Small world......

The picture I posted is not my exact motor. I got it off google to post quickly. It is identical to mine other than that the decals are in slightly better condition.

Re: Help with 15hp Gamefisher (Force)

The compression was 65psi on the top and 60psi on the bottom. This seemed low but if anyone knows for fact what it should be please let me know.
Thanks,
