good afternoon guys,
I am having problems and not sure I understand what I am seeing. my motor is a 1993 johnson TJ150 LETR...I have been told this is like a faststrike.
Anyways..last weekend at Kentucky Lake I was making a move across the lake and as I was getting the boat on plane, it just quit dead. Like you had pulled the kill switch. I tried to restart a couple of times with no luck. About an hour later I tried again and the motor fired right up. howver it seemed to be missing somewhat and was very hard to get on plane.
Fast forward to this week and iwas in the garage trying to diagnose the problem. didn't really find anything so I took it to the river and tried again. Same thing, died as i was getting on plane, NO restart. pulled it home (about 20 minutes to the house) and tried and the motor fired up on the muffs. it is missing and doesn't seem to rev up like it used to. This time I started going through troubleshooting in my manual to track down the issue.

Here is my question...when doing the power coil test I checked voltage to ground and the orange, and the orange/black wires. The orange/black wire had no voltage. The orange shows 6-7 volts. Sounds like I have a bad stator, does this seem right as compared to my problems?
Thanks you for any help.

Should have 12 -14 volts between wires at cranking...

Sparkie,
based on the drawing and chart refering to "stator to power pack connections" the charge coil readings seem to be fine(.563-.566k ohms). HOWEVER the power coil reads 99 ohms. Does this give you any indication of what might be wrong?
Thanks for the reply, I have learned a few things from your link.

I have found OHM readings on outboard electronics to be very unreliable. you really need to order a DVA adapter and connect it to your (good , not cheapo) multi meter. DVA test are reliable. there is a good chance your stator needs to be replaced, before I order one, for under $30 a dva adapter is just the right thing to do. you can google it and maybe find one cheaper, but the one in my sig is cheap and works great.
you need to test each part, regulator, power pack and stator. the optical sensor cannot be accurately tested and if all else checks out replace it, if you replace the power pack get a new optical sensor also.

I use CDI parts from boatfix.com. you also need the gray plug wires and QL78YC plugs at 030.
also check to make sure your stator is not the old black sleeved one. look at the mesh sleeve on the wires coming from stator, if it is black, replace stator, power pack and optical sensor, use CDI parts.

Thanks Sparkie..I will get the rest of the tools I need and finsh the diagnositcs. one question about the stator replacement. What flywheel puller is needed to get to this and are there any special "situations" I need to be concerned about?
Thanks again for the help.

When you say it dies and won't restart do you mean it'll turn over but not start or will it not turn over (and therefore not start)?

fly wheel comes off pretty easy, just have to break the magnetic pull, no puller or special tools required. helps if you have a buddy and you both gently pry up at the same time, watch your fingers, got mine more than once

Dhadley...The boat cranks just fine. it just won't start. but it spins just as it would normally. it seems to possibly be Ignition/sparkwise...dead. then after a little while it will start right up. Although, last night it was runnin g rough when I got it off idle.
I am in the process of getting a DVA to check the things that I cannot at this time. I am the original owner of this boat/motor and have never had to do more than plugs and one rectifier a few years ago.
