I have a 1997 225 Yamaha OX66 that I bought used from a local shop, they installed the motor on the boat put all new gauges/controls/wiring/fuel lines/fuel filters/cleaned the injectors/new water pump/new thermostats/new PRV basically did a major tune up on the engine (all of this was done about two months ago). The motor has been running great but on this last trip out after about 1 1/2hrs of run time cruising at about 4-4500K RPM it lost power and I got a long solid tone alarm and all three triangles on my tach where blinking ( the red , yellow and green indicators ) the Yamaha tach gauge I have is new but an older style that had been sitting on the shelf. As soon as I brought the motor back to idle , turned it off then immediately re-started it the alarm was gone. Could plane up for about 40seconds and the same thing would happen. I pulled the cowling and felt the heads both were not hot I could hold my hand on them without a problem and both felt about the same temp. I ended up just idling back to the dock at about 1200 RPM with no alarms or hesitation. I also observed that the oil tank on the motor was a little less than half full at the time and the remote tank on the boat is full. I seem to think that the tank on the motor should always remain full (to the fill line).

So my two guesses are that I either have a oil flow restriction or pump failure or my PRV is sticking and the engine is building to much water pressure.

What do you guys think? Any information or experience would be a great help.

Going into limp mode due to low oil level in main tank

That's what I was thinking , I tried to use the manual override switch on the side of the motor to pump oil into the main tank but nothing happened. The switch wont engage it feels like its stuck. Also I was reading that on the 1997 models the motor needs to be trimmed all the way down for the oil to transfer from the reserve oil tank to the main, is this true?

From what I have read 1996 on up V4's and V6's the auto transfer of oil was tied to the motor running not trim.

What makes you think this motor is a 1997?
Posting a model # helps all know what motor you have.

If the oil module thinks the remote tank is low the auto fill does not work, but the manual should.

Seems you need to do some testing to see if it is pumping oil at all.
Maybe the in line oil filter is plugging or you have some other restriction that is slowing the transfer

The boats a few hours away right now, cant get the model number off of it. But when I bought the motor I double checked the serial and model number to make sure it was a 97 and matched the title. The oil filter and all the lines are brand new, I've only put about 10 hours on it since I bought the motor. It is actually still covered under the warranty period from the shop I got it from so worse case I'll just take it back to them. But was going to see if It was an easy fix that I can figure out to avoid trailering it ( I keep it in a slip and would have to borrow a trailer ).

Is there a procedure I can follow to check the oil system , or some type of online Yamaha owners manual that you know of?

In the 90's, the oil transfer was connected to the trim switch so it disengaged the transfer when the engine was tilted up but its rare to see that happening now a days. If you don't hear the electric motor running in the aux tank, then that is the problem. First the aux tank quits pumping at 1/3 so be sure its full. Then check to see if there is power going to the motor with the bypass switch held in the on position. It can also be caused by the float switch in the main tank not working also.

see if this will help,

But if under warranty I would take it back to them, if they find out you have been playing with it they may say you caused what ever is wrong

If you plan on keeping that motor and working on it yourself,
you need to pick up a Yamaha service manual for that motor

Thanks for the tips, ill do a little bit of trouble shooting before brining it back to that shop and will for sure get a service manual.

Fairly sure pump should have power when ever key is in the on position, and oil module and the e switch control the ground.

If you can not turn the e switch on then you need to make sure they address that under warranty also

Check oil feed line from remote tank to main a lot of times you will find it is crimped or twisted going thru hull or maybe the remote oil tank is sitting on it.

There is a filter in the Aux. Oil Tank. I seen it plugged up solid.
