Help with Alpha Trim Ram Rebuild

I would be very grateful for some help with this.

My Alpha one Gen one trim ram became seized between the end cap and the piston rod. My boat is permanently in the water on a mooring which drys out at low tide and I managed to remove the piston rod assembly leaving the cylinder behind on the boat tied up out of the way.

I managed to free up the top cap using a large socket, trolley jack and vice (!) and have now cleaned up all surfaces and replaced the seals etc using a GLM seal kit.

I have read the workshop manual and followed all the instructions for reassembly but just noticed some parts which seem to be missing from what I have removed?

On the diagram it shows the piston head with the three check balls, large bolt and spring etc but also some further parts on the upper side of the piston described as follows...

7. Install check ball (l), check ball eyelet (m), spring (n) and spring pin (o) into shock piston.

When I removed the rod assembly from the cylinder I don't recall seeing these?

Have I lost them? How are they secured in place? The manual isn't very clear on this one area so I would be very grateful for some guidance.

Many thanks

When you took it apart did you remove the bottom bolt with the valving?
what manual are you using?

Hi thanks

I unscrewed the top cap and withdrew the whole piston assembly and brought it home. I left the cylinder behind with the floating piston remaining inside.

Back at my workshop I unscrewed the bottom bolt but kept the whole piston assembly together and put it to one side while I un stuck the top cap from the piston rod so I could slide it on and off.

By the piston assembly I mean the bolt, washer, spring, spring guide, spring guide washer, check balls (3) and piston.

My concern is that there is a slot and other holes in the rear face of the piston and there were no corresponding parts.

I am not sure which manual I have exactly as I downloaded a sub section from a link on a forum and only have the front page of the section which just says

Power Trim
Trim Cylinders
5D

Thanks again

this type if you carefully removed the bolt and carefully set it aside you should be ok.

Re: Help with Alpha Trim Ram Rebuild

That's the same diagram I have been using.

The parts I can't work out are l m n o. I'm not sure where they are? All the other seem to be retained by the bolt and can Only be separated once this is undone. I know I have all those because I kept the assembly together.

But where are l m n o? The manual doesn't say a lot about them even in the reassembly instructions?

Many thanks

Are you sure "o" isn't on the side of the piston head holding "l", "m", and "n" together?

Hey I think you're right. I just checked and I can see the pin in the side of the piston so the other bits must be inside. Happy days!

Many thanks for both your help.
