Hi guys i wondered if anyone could give me some advice here...i have a 30l mercruser engine year 1989...i noticed that my boat cranked over slowly today when i started it....when it started i also noticed that the volt gauge was low and i guessed the alternator was not chargeing....i opened the engine bay and looked at the wireing to the alternator and noticed that 3 small wires with round rings on the end where hanging off...1 wire was a solenoid...the other was a very short wire that looked like it came from the voltage regulator and the other came out the loom..then i noticed what look like the sheared gound pole on the back of the alternator that all the wires used to bolt to....i gounded the short wire that came from the voltage regulator to what was left of the broken pole and the voltgae gauge shot up as if it was now chargeing..so in short i have just enough thread left to bolt the wire from the loom which i guess is the ground from the battery and the wire from the voltage regulator to what is left of the broken ground pole...i have left the solenoid wire off as with 3 wire rings on the broken pole i could not even start a nut on the one thread i had to tighten it with...and its not tight just stoping the wires from falling back off...my question is..do the wires i have explane sound like they should be grounded...also if so can i ground these wires somewhere else...ie engine block...or do i have to buy a new alternator?...or is there some way of repairing a broken ground pole on a alternator...thx guys for your help and advice...
