Hi, I've been reading here for a week or so and decided to join in hopes that someone may be able to help me out with this engine/boat I just bought.

The engine/controls have a few issues but #1 is that it wont idle and needs have a good amount of throttle to start, after choking it and then turning the choke off. It'll run for a few minutes and die out and seems severely underpowered at WOT.

So, I ordered a carb kit w/float today and would like to be ready when it arrives. My question; is there how-to on carb removal and rebuild (or something similar) on the site that I've missed?

One of the issues I have with removal/reinstall is the lean/rich dial as I've never delt with a motor that had that before. In fact, I've only ever worked on a Merc 4hp, 4 stroke.

Thanks and I appreciate any advice anyone may be able to offer.

EDIT: My apologies for the double post. I was getting a database error and wasn't sure what to do.

The carbs are very simple to work on and service. You can pull it off, dismantle, then soak overnight while waiting for your kit. I now soak in Pine Sol. Smells better than carb cleaner solvent and better for the skin!

Pull off carb, remove the float bowl, remove float, needle/seat, nozzle, pull out high and low speed needle, packing nuts, old packing. Pull drain plug. Remove welch plug on top. Then let it soak. When done, I wash with hot soapy water, then blast dry with compressed air. Install new kit. Look in the Top Secret Files for a thread on all of this with pics to help. Also couple You Tube videos online done by aomci members that will help.

Where do I set the gland nut (bushing?) on the low speed needle?

Snug it up enough to get desired difficulty to turn the needle (so it will turn by hand, but not from vibration).

I'm hopefully getting a carb kit tomorrow so can you please tell me if have this correct? Drop the bushing in the hole, put 2 washers on top of that, install nut and finally screw in the jet until it lightly seats? I'm also thinking that the nut has to be at least tight enough to keep the bushing from spinning when the needle threads down through it.

Thanks.

You got it, and back it out 1.5 turns, then fine tune on water.

Drop the plug in, then use an extension bar from your socket set and a hammer to gently tap it, spreading the dome, making the seal. A little of your wifes clear nail polish will ensure there are no air leaks.

Sorry to be a PITA but where does the dark red piece with the tab go? I also don't see a place for the 3rd small black washer
Edit: I understand that all of the pieces do not go directly into the carb as some are for linkage/cam follower.IMG-20140909-00881.jpg

I got the kit installed and had it out on the water for only a couple of minutes. It screams along pretty well. The idling needs to be fine tuned and could use a new set of plugs so I'll do that after I have them in.

Big thanks to you guys for the help. Awsome site you have here.

As you found, lots of extra parts as a carb kit covers many models.
