Help with choke problem PLEASE?

I have a 1990 70hp johnson. i took it out today for the first time. It has a red thumb screw that I think is the choke on the right side of the motor.

When I tried to push it up to speed it would just bog down, but if I adjusted the red thumb screw it would jump up and run. When I pulled the throttle back, it would stall out and not restart until i turned the screw back to the original position.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

To better understand what's going on just be aware that you don't have a choke system but rather a primer system. The primer squirts fuel into the fuel intake system and can do so whether the motor is running or not.

Now, if your motor is bogging on acceleration it's probably due to lack of fuel. Most common issue is a restriction in the carb(s). Bumping the primer or setting it to allow fuel into the motor by-passes the carbs and gives the motor enough fuel to accelerate. When you slow down the extra fuel floods the motor.

I'd suggest starting with a good carb soaking and make sure the right Champion plugs are installed.

This is assuming the carbs have the original jetting. If someone has been playing with jets, that's a whole different ball game.

agree 100% read this http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=244013

Primer Solenoid

if the red valve is in the 6 oclock position, the primer is letting gas into the intake flooding the motor. it should be like the picture back center line with the body. that's why it is flooding out. this should cure your problem. let me know.

the primer replaced the old choke butterflies in the carborators, pushing in the key activates it, like the old choke plates.

this picture has the lever in the proper run position.

Since the primer is electric and is activated when you push in on the key when cold-starting, some means of priming the engine is needed if you had a dead battery and needed to rope start the engine. In that case, you flip the red lever to the PRIME position, give the primer bulb in the fuel line a squeeze or two which injects fuel into the intake, and then start the engine. If you leave the red lever in the PRIME position it continues to suck way too much fuel so it must be flipped back to the run position. This is the only situation when that lever needs to be messed with (or if the primer solenoid itself is damaged).

Re: Help with choke problem PLEASE?

Thanks for the reply. I think I am have a carbs problem. I took it out today with the primer solenoid in the proper position, but it still bogged down.

I had the carbs a part last week and they look very clean, but I really don't know what i am looking for.

Let me ask another question. When I got the motor, it was leaking fuel through the red lever on the primer solenoid. I replaced the lever (following the vague instructions). Is it possibly that I put the ever in wrong and it is not in correctly?

Re: Help with choke problem PLEASE?

I have a 1988 70 hp evinrude and it has an electric primer as well...but the red lever doesnt look like the ones in the photos here..it is slimmer and short...it swings a little more than 180 degrees...and is mounted to the left and in between the bottom and middle carbs.

with the round body of the primer being horizontal and pointing towards me and away...the lever flips between 180 degrees away from me to pointing towards me( the front of the motor) there seems to be a detent at 90 degrees downward as well

which direction should it be pointing when in normal uase( ie the battery is powering the starter properly)

thanks
