Help with correct WOT timing. I have always had success with the Joe reeves method. I have a number of Johnson/Evinrude outboards ranging in hp. from 8 to 55, and ranging in model years from1977-1981, also have service manuals for each of them. We have two 1977 55?s and a 79, 25 that have been great over the years, and have always done the work on them myself, including new pistons and rings. So I?m very familiar with the late 70?s loopers. But that's all. I need help concerning a Johnson 1986 50 hp. VRO. Model: J50 BELCDE. (A new engine for me). The only manual I have for it is horrible. It?s an internet download that covers 30 years of motors of various horsepower?s. The Appendix of this manual shows WOT timing (for an 86 50 hp.) at 19 degrees, which is the same as my older 55?s, and makes sense. However the silencer on the motor has a very generic looking sticker stating only: 21 BTC. I don?t really even know if the silencer is original to the engine. Does anyone out there have a service manual for a 1986 Johnson 50 hp. that can clear this up for me? I would be very thankful.

Probably is what the sticker says. My 97' 115 has a generic looking sticker on the silencer also, that says 26 BTC. I would go with that if I were you.

Re: Help with correct WOT timing

I will definately buy the proper manual, as I have for every outboard I have ever owned. But I just bought the motor and would like to time it before I bring it up to Canada on Tuesday. The best I could do was the quick download manual. I just didn't have enough time. I'm only confused because the two 55's I have (1977's) are 19 BTDC, and I know the 60 hp's of that era are typically 21. I suspect this has a silencer from a 60 hp., hence the 21 sticker........ EN2 THANKYOU!!!! That's what I needed to hear.
