Brand new or rebuilt, you would expect 130-140 PSI. Old and not rebuilt, anything over 100 would probably be acceptable.
Timing is set to 32 degrees before top dead center at wide open throttle. Timing can be checked and set without the engine running. Remove and ground all three plugs. Turn on the ignition switch to the RUN position. Set throttle to wide open. Turn flywheel slowly by hand and watch for the spark. See where the timing mark is in relation to the pointer line. Adjust by the screw between the distributor and timing tower.
Top cylinder is #1. Firing order is 123
Oops! Forgot! If your engine is 1979 1/2 with one piece lower unit, no distributor, and Prestolite ignition, timing must be set with a timing light and while the engine is running. Do not try to adjust timing while engine is running. The flywheel will paint the engine red and enter you into the 9 finger club.
