Bubbakat,
Can you acheive the same results by doing this process on the waterhose or does it have to be in the water? I have the outboard muffler system that creates the right amount of backpressure on it.

Thanks:
Jason

On the hose would be better, Jason. That way you would only goop up your yard instead of the lake.

Flush muffler is a very good idea. How well does it quiet the engine?

Do I have to use a muffler?

Or can I just do it in my yard with the ear muff.

Re: Help with decarb.

JB,
It does a good job as far as knoocking down the noise. My 115 crossflow is loud as all get out on the water hose and when you put the muffler on it it makes it sound like a 4 stroke.

Bill,
No....you don't have to use the muffler. It's just a good thing to have to keep the noise down...thats all.

Thanks:
Jason

Bill,
I think I'm going to try the deep creep stuff if I can find it. They say that NAPA has it...we'll see.

Jason

Re: Help with decarb.

Bill,
Well...the boat has responded well to all the changes I've made so far. The only problem now is that I could use some more height and I'm maxed out without adding a jackplate. The boat used to run about 44mph @ 4800 rpms. Since I made the changes Dhadley helped me with it is spinning @ 5400 @ 48 mph. I have only changed setup....no engine mods yet. I was hoping this decarb thing will help give me another 100 or so rpm's. I think my next investment would be a good OMC raker prop. I'm running just a standard omc SST 19" prop right now.

Jason

Re: Help with decarb.

I've read all the decarb posts throughout the site. None talk about whether any harm can come to a motor by doing this. I've got an '87 Evinrude V4 90 horse that I'm sure no one has ever done a decarb procedure on. Checked compression recently and each cylinder was right at 120. Runs fine otherwise and I've got no complaints. I normally run seafoam in every tank of gas to prevent further build up of carbon and to keep the carbs fairly clean, but this isn't removing the life-long deposits that are in the engine. I'd like to get all the carbon and gunk out of her if such would make her run a little cooler and thereby last for more years, but I also don't want to harm the engine by doing this treatment when there's 17 years of build up in it.

Any possible downsides to doing a decarb on a
motor? Could a piece of carbon break off instead of dissolving and then just lay on top of a piston to cause problems (had that happen on a pontiac grand prix 24 valve one time, although it was the decarb method that actually finally disolved the carbon pieces that fell on top of the piston)? Or what effect does this have on the carbs themselves?

Thanks,

Mark
Minneapolis, MN

Re: Help with decarb.

The instructions are a litle fuzzy.

Can I just mix a 16 oz can with 3/4 of a gallon of gas and oil mix and hook the small tank directly to the engine.
Or do I have to go thru the filter?
I am reading this wrong?

I have a johnson 115hp 1976

All I have is a fitting on the motor I hook the hose to.

I have a permant tank but it hooks just like the small one with that fitting.

Its not a special fitting a standard johnson fitting you can buy at Wallmart.

Re: Help with decarb.

Bill,
I wouldn't go through the filter. I would just get me a piece of 3/8" fuel line. Thake it loose on the inlet side of the bulb and hook your new hose to that an run in into the little small tank. Leave the same connection on your motor. Did that clear it up any? Somebody even suggested using an old milk jug as your small tank. I haven't decided if I'm going to go that route or spraying though the carbs.

Jason

Re: Help with decarb.

Thats what I had planed to do but the instructions says to start and wait 15 minutes then let it start pulling the mix in to the motor.

Do I start with fresh gas to get warmed up then switch tanks to the decarb mix?

I think that is what i am going to do.

Re: Help with decarb.

Yea....I would start engine with fresh gas first until you get some heat in the motor. You can do one of two things, you can either shut it down after it warms up and unhook your hose and restart it with the hose in the mix or you can leave your hose clamps loose and pull the hose off while engine is still running from and stick the hose into the small tank.

Jason

Re: Help with decarb.

I have had one problem since I did a decarb on my 73 85horse Evinrude.

It seems that all the carbon build up was covering the fact that a head gasket was bad and now that the carbon is gone the gasket is leaking water into cylinder number 1.

Txduckster,

Well I'll bet #1 won't carbon back up now, since it's getting steam cleaned as it runs! Sorry, I just couldn't resist. . .

Re: Help with decarb.

LOL..txduckster,
It's kinda like when I switched my drag car over to run Methanol instead of racing gas. With the added torque it put out it found all my weak spots in my drivetrain. Needless to say after a busted planitary and ring gear (seperate races) I've got all the weak spots taken care of now.

Later:
Jason
