Re: Help with decarb.
I've read all the decarb posts throughout the site. None talk about whether any harm can come to a motor by doing this. I've got an '87 Evinrude V4 90 horse that I'm sure no one has ever done a decarb procedure on. Checked compression recently and each cylinder was right at 120. Runs fine otherwise and I've got no complaints. I normally run seafoam in every tank of gas to prevent further build up of carbon and to keep the carbs fairly clean, but this isn't removing the life-long deposits that are in the engine. I'd like to get all the carbon and gunk out of her if such would make her run a little cooler and thereby last for more years, but I also don't want to harm the engine by doing this treatment when there's 17 years of build up in it.

Any possible downsides to doing a decarb on a
motor? Could a piece of carbon break off instead of dissolving and then just lay on top of a piston to cause problems (had that happen on a pontiac grand prix 24 valve one time, although it was the decarb method that actually finally disolved the carbon pieces that fell on top of the piston)? Or what effect does this have on the carbs themselves?

Thanks,

Mark
Minneapolis, MN
