Hi Everyone,

I am new to this site and have just purcahsed my first speed boat, a Glastron 15ft with Johnson 50 VRO outboard motor. I am trying to find out the year of the engine. I have found a number stamped on the top of the engine that reads G2292363. Could someone please tell me what year it is as I am trying to find out the correct oil/fuel mix.

Many Thanks in advance

This is in the FAQ. IT will help with the year. Look on the stern bracket for your model number. If your stern brackets have been painted, look for the frost plug. It is located on the top backside of your motor. It is about the size of a quarter and silver (or black) and will have the model and serial number on it. GL

I have looked all over the stern bracket but there is no model number. The only number I can find is the one I quoted above. I found that on the frost plug and it reads G2292363. Any other advice? Really need to know the year so I can find the mix for fuel & oil.
Many Thanks In Advance

I assume the VRO is disconnected since you want to premix your fuel. I think VRO engines came out in 1986, give or take a year, so the correct ratio would be 50:1. 50:1 is what I use in my 1988 60hp Johnson that has had the VRO disconnected.

I don't think that's the right number Roxy . I'm not positive but I would think the number would start with J50---------- . Look on the mount ( the motor mount that goes over the transom ) It should have a plate on it with the model number on it . Most probably on the left side of the motor .

Try this link Roxy , Just select a year model that you think it might be close to and you'll see model numbers for Johnson motors . It will give you an idea of what to look for . If you find the right number and post it , I'll try to help you out with it . Thanks to Tashasdaddy helping me out , I was able to do some process of elimination searches and ID my motor . Like I said in my previous post , don't look on the engine itself . Look below the engine (on the left side ) on the mount frame for a metal tag with the model number engraved on it . It should begin with J50

Re: Help with finding out the year of my Johnson 50 VRO

Thank you so much for your help. I am a COMPLETE beginner and so the most simplist of things are a task for me. Can I go back to the VRO question first. I can not see an oil tank anywhere. I read somewhere that the oil tank is kept in the boat opposite the battery on the port side. If that is the case it has been removed as there is only the fuel tank and battery in the boat.
As for the serial number I would like to say a massive thank you to you Monkaroo, I have looked on the mount and around that area but there is no plate or numbers. It has been painted at some point in time. I will go out tomorrow morning and have another good look at it.
Thank you so so much for your kind help, I am a very grateful lady. :)

Roxy the model number must be on there, maybe give it another look. Look for the frost plug, again it is about the size of a quarter or nickel and usually on the top backside of the motor. It will probably have 2 numbers on it, the model number and the serial number, the number you gave may very well be the serial number, but im not positive, but we need the model number. A pic may also help narrow down the year so you at least know whether to mix at 24 or 50 to 1. It sounds as if your vro is disconnected, did the previous owner now mention anything about it?

Anything after the early 60s is going to be 50:1.

That being said, if it is a VRO, and the VRO is connected and working you don't need to mix at all. That's the job of the VRO. There should be an oil line running from the motor to the oil tank. Follow it, and you'll find the tank. If there's no tank or line, the VRO was probably disabled and you'll need to premix at 50:1.

I am back with pics. I have been all over it, there are no more numbers apart from the one I have spoken about above. The vro pump assembly is still there but the oil tank has been removed and where it goes into the engine has been plugged, you can see it in pic 3. its a yellow plug.

From your photos, it's clear that your engine is not an ancient antique and therefore the fuel mixture is 50:1 (6 gallons of gas to 1 pt. of TCW3 oil). 2 stroke outboards have been 50:1 since the 60's and yours is 80s vintage more or less.

The model number is somewhere on the engine - it is just tough to find. You might have to move wires, coils, etc. to find it. Good luck though!

What is that silver plug with the letter and number on it? I thought that number was the serial number on the frost plug?

Somewhere around the mid-80s OMC, in its infinite wisdom, stopped putting the model number on the welch plug. I believe by the 90s they started again. Your best bet to figuring out the year is probably getting an assembly number off of one of the carbs, if you can find it. They tend to change more often than other things. Sometimes they're a little tag that hangs off one of the float bowl screws. Its in the mid to late 80s I'm pretty sure.

I did not know that - thanks! I will quit being so adamant that the model number can be found on the engine. My 82 V6 had it. I'm taking posession of a '90 V6 tonight and one of the first things I'll look at (for curiosity sake) is to see if there is a M/N on the engine.
