I need help finding a list of parts for a 1964 Johnson 9.5 MQ10R. I also heard that the Evinrude 9422 is interchangable.

An issue I am having is that it runs great mid to high but idle it is either rough or stalls.

It has good spark & fuel pump. new starter rope and new thermostat.

Re: Help with finding parts and more 1964 9.5

Use Champion J4C or J6C spark plugs, gapped at .030.

Set points as follows.

(Point Setting Of Magneto Models)
(J. Reeves)

Set the points as follows. Have the flywheel key aligned with the fiber rubber portion of the ignition points. Adjust the gap so that a .020 gauge will pass thru but a .022 will not. Should there be any question of the points being dirty (touching the contact with your finger would cause them to be dirty), clean them with a small brush and acetone or lacquer thinner.

NOTE: Should the operating cam have a small portion on it with the word "SET" imprinted, align this portion with the fiber rubbing portion instead of the flywheel key.

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)
(J. Reeves)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

Note 1: As a final double check setting of the slow speed valve(s), if the engine has more than one carburetor, do not attempt to gradually adjust all of the valves/carburetors at the same time. Do one at a time until you hit the above response (die out or spit back), then go on to the next valve/carburetor. It may be necessary to back out "all" of the slow speed adjustable needle valves 1/8 turn before doing this final adjustment due to the fact that one of the valves might be initially set ever so slightly lean.

Note 2: If the engine should be a three (3) cylinder engine with three (3) carburetors, start the adjustment sequence with the center carburetor.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

(Carburetor Float Setting)
(J. Reeves)

With the carburetor body held upside down, the float being viewed from the side, adjust the float so that the free end of the float (the end opposite the hinge pin) is ever so slightly higher (just ever so slightly off level) than the other end. And when viewed from the end, make sure it is not cocked.

How long have you had the motor? Has it ever ran better for you? That year was very poor at idle. They literally shook themselves to death at idle. There is a vibration damper in the front which had a plastic friction pad bonded to it. The pad would fall off within the first 6 months, then it shook worse than ever. If the pad is still there, adjust the springs for maximum tension. But it will still idle lousy. I believe 1966 was the year they put vibration dampers on the sides and made a good running motor out of it.

I will have to check that...It does not vibrate that much just idles really rough. Going to do what Joe has first and then go from there.

It has been running fine in Feb and march. It just started this crap maybe a month ago.
had it for about 2 years maybe.
Thanks to all!
