Help with flywheel.

How do you remove the flywheel on a 1965 Johnson 9.5 HP? I have done it on the bigger motors that you use a harmonic balancer puller but it does not look the same for these. Any help would be great.

Remove the flywheel nut and cover washer, isn't there 3 holes there to attach the puller?

I had no luck with a harmonic puller. I used a flywheel puller, a propane torch,
PB Blaster, and then had to use a pry bar. It came off.

use flywheel puller[like a steering wheel puller]tighten down on it ,let it sit a while,marinate,tighten down a little more,if it doesnt pop then ,let it sit for a while longer,might have to tap lighlty upward on each side of endplay with a rubber hammer,careful ,eventually it will pop,,,careful if using any heat,like a torch,,i wouldnt really recommend that,,,,,i would recmnd just a little patience,esp if its never been off before or been 20 yrs or so since

use a small sledge hammer thats all i use and it works like a charm

Aw come on guys, do it right. A harmonic balancer puller will pop it right off. Sledges, heat, pullers that grab the outside, all will destroy the poor thing. Besides, a 9.5 doesn't come off all that hard anyway.

I don't see the normal holes for a harmonic puller that's why i'm kind of stuck. I will not be banging it off. There has to be some way to pull it of right. I will keep checking. Thanks for the help.

I just pulled the flywheel on a '67 Evinrude today.

I bought a harmonic balancer puller at NAPA for $25 and three 2.5" Grade 8 bolts (quarter-20 threads) with washers at the hardware store.

Take off the rope start then there should be a flywheel nut (mine was 1-1/16"). The rope start ratchet (looks like a circular "claw") is under the flywheel nut and held on by three 1/4-20 bolts. Remove those and take off the ratchet then put the flywheel nut back on but not all the way. The flywheel nut needs to be on to protect the threads as you pull the flywheel.

Put the harmonic balancer puller on with the grade 8 bolts in the three holes where the rope ratchet was. tighten it as much as you can without stripping or breaking anything and if it doesn't pop then spray it with some WD-40 to help loosen it up. Let it sit under tension for a good while, then come back and tighten it incrementally another 1/4 turn until it finally pops. A hammer helps but don't hit the flywheel. Hit the top of the puller instead. Just a good rap, not a sledge hammer action or anything. It took two days for mine to come loose.

Edit: Mine was a 33HP and I just realized the rope start is different on a 9.9HP. IN any case there should be three 1/4-20 threaded holes on the flywheel right next to the flywheel nut.

I'll guaran-dang-tee you that the 3 holes are there. Under the chrome ring.

The harmonic puller I tried (KD-Tools) wouldn't allow the bolts to get close enough to the center for a straight pull, hence the flywheel puller. I don't
really like using the torch but in this case it did the trick. I had it under tension
for a week with regular applications of PB Blaster. A torch may be a bit med evil
but stripping the threads out of the flywheel would have been tragic.

Get the right length Gr 8 bolts. Some of you guys are making a really simple job too difficult.

Duh!! I feel like an idiot now. The holes were under the chrome ring. Thanks for the help. I was used to the Johnson 40 types.
