Got stuck out on the water with the family. Horrible feeling. The boat started but would not go into gear. Luckily I was able to find the problem. The cable came free from its proper mounting location. I got back safely, but I went back today and saw that it popped out again. Is there a cotter pin or nut missing? Hope the pictures help. 1994 Mercury 175 HP 2.5 litre. Oh yeah the oil alarm also went off on the way in....but thats for another day...

#1. is the cable that popped out. #2. slides back and forth #3. I had to take this off to re seat #1 onto its pin

Place item #1 so that the hole is on the sliding pin.

Item #2 is a spring loaded retainer meant to keep the shift cable in the proper spot, and it swivels around to cover the hole in Item #1 that holds it in place. One end of Item #2 has just a little bit of a raised pin facing downwards that should sit in the hole in item #1. You have the option of tightening the nut on item #2 a bit once it is in its proper spot, to ensure that it doesn't pop off again on you.

Item #3 looks okay. You may need to swivel it out of the way and temporarily detach the throttle cable to tighten the shift retainer nut if you wish. After you put it back, you can tighten the phillips head screw on #3 to make sure it never pops off either.

Good luck.

AMD rules,

Great thanks. I will check that out tomorrow. I don't remember there being a little stub sticking out the bottom of item 2. I'll take a look.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Glad to hear it worked out ok for you.

If your alarm is insisting you reservoir be completely full, it sounds like it must be set too high. The intention of the alarm is too warn you that you are getting low. Not sure if it is ajdutable. Others may know.

I have an older Mercury but similar problems and also had to be hauled back. I have a 1975, 65 horse. It would start but when I put it into gear it stalled out. I just had it serviced and the only thing they changed was the plugs and oil.
Please help me to.

The oil alarm is telling you that you have about 20 minutes of running rime at WOT. Not that you are out of oil.

Lineman, I'd suggest you start your own thread. You will get a better response.
