Hey guys, So I have been trying to do the bellows job on my 165 mc-I. The problem I have run into is getting the hinge pin out of the left side. I tried the special tool broke 3 of those tried a 1/2 inch allen and stripped the pin head. Tried drilling through it and using easy out the tip of that broke off into the bolt and cannot drill through that at least not very well. I had a welder weld to the pin and they tried removing it that way broke 4 times. Tried propane first then mapp gas and the welder tried some kind of heat. The problem seems to be the pin doesn't move when the lower moves its more like it threading and unthreading at the bolt. SO Now I am completely out of ideas and wondering how to remove the gimble ring itself and maybe try bringing to a machine shop or buy a replacement on ebay.

Can I remove the gimble ring with the bell housing still attached? And how?

so when you rotate the bellhousing, the hinge pin remains stationary??

Correct the pin does not move at all but the bellhousing still does.

Re: Help with gimble ring removal.

then i would say the pin has fused to the gimble ring and the threads are loose from the bell housing

heat, penetrating oil, and an impact driver would be how i would attack it - sure sounds like you have tried quite a few different tricks with little results

with the other pin out have you tried hitting inward on the pin with a punch and stout hammer?? i guess all you need to do is knock it loose from the ring at this point, its not threaded into the ring at all

Re: Help with gimble ring removal.

I have not tried anything from the other hole but I will have to try something problem I think I will have is getting the bolt out of the bellhousing its going to hard to knock the bolt out of the threads. I think I can helicoil it if its not to mashed up afterwords but nothing seems to be getting this thing out.

Any idea if I can just remove the ring with the bellhousing on it so its easier to work with?

you won't have the clearance to drop the upper shaft out with the bellhousing in the way

you don't need to worry about the bellhousing threads at this point, they are loose - the only part holding you up is the outer diameter of the hinge pin fused to the ring, knock it loose and you are home free

look at the other pin you have out, the larger diameter, non-threaded portion is what is stuck in the ring - shouldn't be too much to smack that thing loose with a stout hammer and punch

If you have a full circle of a hinge pin, drill it out. Start small like 1/8" & go up. Hinge pin thread 5/8" -18tpi. It'll come, just be patient.
