Re: Help with Ignition Troubleshooting

Not an I/O owner, so I can't help, but you may get a lot more help posting this question in the Mercruiser Engine forum.

LOTS of great guys hanging out in there... Might take a bit on a holiday weekend, but give them a day or so......

Best of luck w/ getting Old Gold fired up & running right.

Re: Help with Ignition Troubleshooting

So what i gather is that you have all the primary power you need... 12v to the coil, the points are switching (open/close) condenser isn't shorted...cap, rotor wires ok.. but no spark... hmmm dead secondary windings in coil... or, if the coil has internal ballast resistor, the resistor is blown open. check the coil primary AND secondary for continuity, 1.3 ohms primary, 20k plus (but not open) on secondary..

Had same thing last year - doesn't hurt or cost too much to replace coil and points....

Do you have spark at the spark plug, pull the plugs and verify you have spark.
are the plugs wet with fuel? If you have spark, compression, and fuel it should start.
It ran when you put it away?

How Much spark do you have? In other words how intense is it?
If you have spark on the coil wire at the cap but not coming back out on the plug wire could be a back cap, seen it before even when they look good.
Or the strength of the spark is not enough to actually ignite the fuel under compression, in other words, it blows out.
If you have not changed the cap and rotor I would start there.

I think Mark found his answer over in the Merc forum. Or at least stopped updating it too.....
