My boat is a '94 Four Winns 190 Horizon with the 5.8L Ford with a Cobra outdrive. I'm replacing the impeller, twhere the pump is on the engine, not the outdrive. I bought a kit that includes the o-ring and gasket. I did not pay good enough attention when taking it apart, and can't remember what side of the wear plate the gasket goes.

I looked for a diagram, but found a video on utube, and a young guy showing how to replace the impeller with a pump that looks just like mine. After watching that, I was left with more questions than answers. Do I just jam the impeller in the housing? Couldn't I use a lube, wouldn't that make it easier? When it came time for the gasket, he used 2, one on each side of the wear plate; the triangle (the same as the old one I took off), and a round one with a bunch of holes, where none really match up. Tell me that video was supposed to be a joke! Thanks for any help.

Hope to get this done, will be my first time on the lake this year.

first, welcome aboard

second, if you are watching a video on you-tube to service a very specific application, put your tools down and slowly back away. there is more mis-information on you tube than in s seloc or clymer manual

always get a factory service manual.

if your "Cobra" drive has the raw water pump mounted on the engine and not in the drive, then you have a volvo penta outdrive with an OMC sticker. true cobra drives have the impeller in the upper drive housing.

so, first identify what you have

here is a step by step sequence for replacing a cobra impeller http://www.sterndrive.info/id341.html

here is a link to volvo penta manuals that are posted on-line http://boatinfo.no/lib/library.html

use KY jelly to install the impeller, never use any petroleum product.

Thanks for the links. My neighbor suggested Vaseline for the impeller. I should avoid that? We know KY isn't bad for rubber, lol

Yup, 100%.

The online manual says to use OMC Triple Guard Grease. I have some so I'll put the Vaseline back in the bathroom, and use the grease.
