Hello new to the site, and have search the forums and could not find the information I was looking for. So hear it goes.

I have a 1980 25 hp Mercury outboard with tiller control and want to convert to remote. I have the steering figured out as to how I will connect. But having trouble with finding a way to connect the Throttle and shifter. Using a duel OMC control box. Here are some pictures.

I know motor casing is in need of a paint and body work

Any help would be great and if any one has done this and has pictures please post them as they will be greatly appreciated. Will post pictures of and steps once I figure out a way to convert this.

Thanks

Re: Help with installing remote controls

Hi,

Well you have a big project going on now.
To use a remote control you will have to replace most everything in picture 2.
That engine is a tiller only. You will have to convert it too the remote version.
As for the OMC box you will have to replace the plastic and brass ends on the cables that attach to the motor over to the Merc style ends.
I would be suprised if you can buy the parts new these days. You will probably have to part source a used boat & motor salvage place. It never hurts to check a Merc dealer to see if the parts are still available. I haven't done one in 25 yrs.

Re: Help with installing remote controls

Contacted a merc dealer and they weren't much help said they couldn't find any listing in there catalog also checked ebay. Looks like I'm going to fab the brackets my self. Does anyone have some picture of the brackets for remote installed on there motor. If you could post them it would greatly appreciated. I pretty much have it figured out as to how I want to do it but factory photos would be of great help.

Thanks.

Does no one have any pictures they could post of the linkage? Or help with finding a linkage for a 81 25hp outboard?

Finished fabricating linkage, as parts needed are no longer available. Works great just have to make a few tweaks clean up the edges and apply some paint and we will be good to go.

Thanks, I'm going to make some scale drawings once I get everything tweaked. And write up a How To. Since I'm sure theres people out there that would like to be able to do this to there outboard also.

There is a mercury breakers on the south coast. Can't for the life of me remember their name.

You could try googling that and they may pop up.
