Hello and help if you can.

I bought an old Boston Whaler and it had a 70hp johnson seahorse on it.

The previous owner had no info on the motor.

I got these serial numbers off the transom mount.

J70TLC09

J6109776

I dont know what year the motor is and want to get it ship shape.

here are some pics.

Thanks, Doug

I assume that's a 17' whaler? if so that motor is a good match for it. Although I wasn't aware it took a long shaft.

it's a good motor when it isn't, there are lots of questions about them here-includnig mine!

welcome to iboats. Is this your first boat?

yup , '85 , i got the same motor . did you fire her up yet ? mine screams , but having a little trouble w/ it at wot . soon to be fixed right after it stops raining , i hope . 70hp hung.jpg got it on a 14' Starcraft American . i've yet to test the vro system but i read they were'nt very reliable back in those days . they upgraded them since w/ different colored nipples from the oil port . also , the pee hose is supposed to be relocated to the top of the block . mine works fine , not going to touch it . the tilt was stuck till ni greased the fittings on the jack plate . works great . lots of top notch mechanics here on iboats . theres nothing you cant find out ....keep us posted .

Thanks guys for the help.

No its not my first boat and it is my 3rd whaler. I restored a 67 17 once and love the hull.

The one in the pic is becoming a Duck Boat believe it or not! I plan on running it on the Chesapeake and Delaware bays.

Instead of buying a new duck boat I decided to go with something I know.

I also have a 1976 21 Outrage with twins on it. I just started working on that one now. It was owned by the Delaware DNR
and I hope to repower next year with a new motor.

Here is a pic of the 17 now......

I have not fired the engine up as of yet. I should be ready in like 2 weeks for a shake-down. Keeping my fingers crossed
and hope it runs good. Guy I bought it from said it was always owned by 1 owner and the motor has good compression.

I guess I will find out...LOL

oh yeah, By the way....

how do you tilt the motor without using power trim and tilt?

I have no battery hooked up and needed to tilt the motor and could not.

I could not find a catch to release the down position? what am I missing?

Thanks, Doug:confused:

There's a bleed valve on the same side as the reservoir, Starboard side, Right hand side of the unit, use a sloted/flat head screwdriver to open and release it.
