I have a '71 Johnson 40hp with control box. This engine has manual tilt/trim. I just bought a '87 Johnson 90hp but it did not come with a control box. I was told by the guy i bought it from who claimed to be a marine mechanic that i could use the old 2 lever control box on this new engine. I matched up the Transmission and throttle cables and i'll have no problem with those. BUT the new engine has more pins on the wire connector harness and the new motor has power trim. The 1971 johnson wire harness is the same shape and the pins are in the same spot and looks like it will line up, but the old one doesnt have as many. If i use the old box with its harness what will i lose? Does the trim go through it? Because it also has a seperate wireharness running from the trim power pack (im guessing to the front of the boat). Is there any place i can find a wiring diagram for the harness and which pins to go what?

best thing to do is get a manual, my clymer manual has wiring diagrams for all permutaions of engines, too complicated to discuss on this forum though. good luck

link for the manual? The local boat stores dont carry it. only the owners manual, which is 5 pages of how to change fluids... aka pointless
